Students should branch out, take advantage of campus diversity

(In response to "Committee discusses campus diversity issues,") This article highlights the ignorance that is prevalent on this campus, which is perpetuated by the Daily Nebraskan's choice of quotes to emphasize on the front page of its newspaper: "Blonde girls hang out with blonde girls."

This quote demonstrates how UNL students are not opening themselves up to diverse opportunities, and excusing this by saying it is natural to hang out with people who look like you is misguided. As a blonde, I'm highly offended by this statement, which completely misrepresents people of this hair color.

Yes, student leaders should have taken the opportunity to attend this focus group, and express our opinions about these issues. Having only five organizations attend is pitiful, but it is close to the end of the semester – final assignments need to be done – and it might have slipped peoples' minds.

I would like to suggest that students on campus open themselves to diverse opportunities, come to the Culture Center for the free lunches provided by OASIS during the first week of the month. Or attend the events which APU, MASA, UNITE, or Multicultural and NPHC Greeks hold. Or students could come just to hang out at the Culture Center.
