Soccer team hoping to protect home-field advantage, streak

Home-field advantage is a very powerful element of Nebraska athletics.

It's led to Memorial Stadium becoming one of the most feared venues in college football, carried the women's basketball team to a resurgent 2009 season and helped Husker volleyball to several national championships.

But it's the spectators at the Nebraska Soccer Field who have gone the longest without seeing a regular season loss. The Cornhusker women's soccer team hasn't dropped a home game since October 2008.

After a tough road loss to open the year, NU hopes to continue its 12-game streak with two important home contests this weekend.

At the Adidas Husker Classic, Nebraska will face Loyola Chicago on Friday and Loyola Maryland on Sunday afternoon.

Wins have been hard to come by for the Huskers this season, as they're just 3-7-2 since the spring exhibition season began in February.

But more important in the long term, though, will be experience gained by its six freshmen starters, who made their college debuts during Sunday's 3-0 loss at New Mexico. NU will need big games from redshirt freshman goalie Emma Stevens, who saved just four of UNM's seven shots on goal.

Nebraska's anemic offense will aim to equal the 13 goals they scored in last year's Adidas Classic, when NU topped North Dakota and Akron.

The Huskers were unable to convert on any of their eight shots on goal against New Mexico and have just 15 goals in their 12 games (including exhibitions) this season.
