Patrick Witt has requested a release from his scholarship and will leave the Nebraska football program.
The quarterback made the request on Friday and finalized details over the weekend.
"Patrick has decided that it is in his best interest to continue his college career at another school," NU coach Bo Pelini said in a statement. "Patrick is a great kid from a great family and I appreciate the contributions he has made to our football program. I wish him nothing but the best in the future and know he will be a success wherever he goes."
A call by the Daily Nebraskan to Witt's cell phone went straight to voicemail.
Witt, a sophomore-to-be, had been expected to compete for the starting quarterback position this spring with junior Zac Lee, redshirt freshman Kody Spano and true freshman Cody Green.
Spano said Sunday night he hadn't heard Witt would be transferring.
"I just thought it was some rumor," Spano said. "I don't know, I mean I really didn't talk to him a whole lot this weekend. From when I have talked to him he sounded fine. He didn't say anything was going on, so I really have no idea."
As a redshirt freshman last season, Witt played backup to senior quarterback Joe Ganz, appearing in five games and completing 6 of 8 passes for 48 yards. He also rushed four times for 20 yards and a touchdown.
In December 2007, Witt was arrested and jailed on suspicion of disturbing the peace, trespassing, third-degree assault by menacing threats, minor in possession by consuming and possession of a false ID.
Since then the Wylie, Texas, native had stayed clear of trouble and was considered a front-runner in the four-horse race for next season's starting quarterback.
