Nebraska freshman infielder and pitcher Colby Gomes was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week Monday.
Gomes came up big this past weekend, hitting a go-ahead RBI and earning his first career save in a 2-1 win over No. 3 Texas Tech Friday. Gomes also started at first base in that win and Nebraska’s 11-10 loss to Sam Houston State Saturday.
The Omaha native was just 1-7 from the plate in Nebraska’s two games, but his one hit came when it mattered most. Gomes hit an RBI single in the seventh inning against Texas Tech to give the Huskers a 2-1 lead, and then followed that up on the mound by striking out two batters and not allowing a single hit in the ninth inning.
Gomes’ late game heroics helped lead Nebraska to its first win over a top-five opponent since 2014, when the Huskers defeated No. 1 Oregon State.
Gomes has had some struggles this season, such as starting 2-9 from the plate thus far and giving up five runs in one inning against No. 7 Oregon State. However, Gomes’ performance against Texas Tech shows he may be able to turn it around.
