The Nebraska men defeated the women in the first ever "Battle of the Sexes" at its annual intrasquad track meet Thursday and Friday at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.

Each squad turned in several impressive individual performances, but the Cornhusker men defeated the women 66-58.

The Internal Association of Athletics Federation scoring tables, which rate individual performances equivalent to a multi-event competition like the decathlon, were used to compare the top two individual performances in each event.

Seniors Ashley Selig and Becky Breisch – two of NU's four returning NCAA champions – recorded throws of 39-6 ½ and 57-10 ¼ respectively in the shot put. Those throws exceeded their personal bests from last season.

Breisch – the 2004 NCAA champion in the outdoor discuss and the 2003 champion in the outdoor shot put – is coming off a redshirt season following an elbow injury.

Another Husker coming off a redshirt season, sophomore Jenny Green, won the women's pole vault by clearing 12-5 ½. Green is still recovering from a back injury she suffered at the 2004 Junior World Championships in Italy.

Senior Ray Scotten and junior Gable Baldwin tied for first place in the men's pole vault at a height of 16-6 ¾. Both are returning NCAA All-Americans in the pole vault.

Sophomore Dusty Jonas – the only Husker to win two events – recorded victories in both the high jump and the triple jump. The La Vernia, Texas, native cleared 7-0 ½ in the high jump and had a winning triple jump of 47-4 ¼.

The Huskers will be back in action Jan. 13 and 14 when they host the Holiday Inn Invitational at the Devaney Center.
