sues Phillips
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- St. Louis Rams running back Lawrence Phillips is accused of beating, threatening and once sexually assaulting Kate McEwen during their two-year relationship at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. McEwen, a former Nebraska basketball player, filed a civil lawsuit Aug. 16 in Jackson County (Mo.) Circuit Court. McEwen's suit alleges a broader pattern of abuse than the September 1995 incident for which Phillips was convicted. It states that Phillips -- who ran for two touchdowns in his professional debut Sunday -- beat, threatened and reconciled with McEwen repeatedly after the two started dating in August 1993.
