Nebraska released its first depth chart of the season Monday morning, five days prior to its season opener against South Alabama.
One year removed from a quarterback competition that lasted through all of fall camp, there were no surprises this year with sophomore Adrian Martinez retaining the starting spot this fall. Martinez started 11 of Nebraska’s 12 games last season, only missing one to injury.
Backing up Martinez will be sophomore Noah Vedral, who appeared in one game in 2018, and true freshman Luke McCaffrey.
The loss of seniors Devine Ozigbo and Stanley Morgan Jr. led to significant changes at running back and wide receiver slots. At running back, junior college transfer Dedrick Mills was listed atop the position list along with sophomore running back Maurice Washington.
Mills started seven games in 2016 as a freshman at Georgia Tech before transferring in the offseason. Washington started two games as a freshman in 2018, but his status for Saturday’s game is unknown, as he is involved in an ongoing legal matter. Head coach Scott Frost told the media on Monday that Mills will be the first running back on the field for the game.
At wide receiver, junior JD Spielman returns atop the depth chart after starting all 10 games he played in in 2018. Graduate transfer Kanawai Noa, who started six games for California in 2018, and true freshman Wan’Dale Robinson are also listed as starting wideouts.
Senior Jaron Woodyard and sophomore Jaevon McQuitty are also listed as backups for Spielman. Senior Mike Williams is listed as an option behind Noa, and redshirt freshman Miles Jones and sophomore Kade Warner are behind Robinson. Warner started seven games as a true freshman in 2018.
On the offensive line, all five starters in Saturday’s game will be underclassmen. The starters include juniors Brenden Jaimes (LT), Boe Wilson (RG, nine starts in 2018) and Matt Farniok (RT, started all 12 games in 2018). Sophomore Trent Hixson will start at left guard, and redshirt freshman Cameron Jurgens will start at center.
The defensive front seven will start five seniors on Saturday, with Carlos and Khalil Davis starting at defensive end, Darrion Daniels starting at nose guard and Alex Davis and Mohamed Barry starting at linebacker. Junior Collin Miller and sophomore Caleb Tannor will also start at linebacker. Senior Tyrin Ferguson, juniors Will Honas and JoJo Domann and freshman Garrett Nelson are also listed as backup options at linebacker.
In the secondary, senior Lamar Jackson and juniors Marquel Dismuke, Deontai Williams and DiCaprio Bootle are listed as starters. Sophomore Cam Taylor and freshmen Braxton Clark and Quinton Newsome are listed as backups.
On special teams, sophomore kicker Barret Pickering and senior punter Isaac Armstrong retained their starting positions, as did senior long snapper Chase Urbach. Washington and Robinson are listed as the starting kick returners. Spielman, Taylor, Robinson and Noa were all listed as options at punt returner.
Nebraska’s season opener against South Alabama kicks off at 11 a.m. on Saturday and can be seen on ESPN.
