Former University of Nebraska-Lincoln student Marcus Hansen was unable to break a United States Tennis Association record on Sunday.

Going for his seventh straight title at the Columbus Open the former Cornhusker club tennis player was unable to rebound from a long semi-final and dropped his final match in straight sets 6-2 6-1 to Ryan Burger.

Whose record was Hansen chasing?

His own.

Last year, Hansen won the Columbus Open for a sixth consecutive time breaking the previous record of five straight title defenses.

On Sunday after the loss, he reflected on his own dominance.

“My six-year reign is now over,” Hansen said. “It was good while it lasted.”

Hansen was the odds on favorite to repeat at the event again this after he had won two tournaments earlier this year.

Hansen has 13 titles in his career. He won’t dwell on not having 14.

“The semi-final match I played this year was the best match that I ever played at the Open,” said Hansen.

His semi-final match was nearly four hours long. During the course of the match he said he hurt his shoulder and struggled to fight through.

Bad shoulder aside, he prevailed in three sets, giving him a shot at breaking his own record.

Hansen said the competition at the Columbus Open was the best that it has ever been while he played.

“The competition in the Columbus Open is the best in the state of Nebraska except for the Omaha or Lincoln tournaments,” Hansen said.

What a pain to watch. I was hoping Günter Parche would show up and put an end to the horror.

Adam, if you would have asked anyone who follows tennis closely they would have told you that I was the favorite. The rankings from the association can be skewed.

i put a little more value in the seedings from the tennis association then the words of journalist trying to write an article. the fact that this article even exists is proof of a slow news day. He did good to just get 249 words out of a non-story, cant blame him for embellishing a little.

He may have been the #1 seed but if you read the very article that you are commenting on it says that I was the odds-on favorite. Real mature on the d-bag comment. I still think that you are just jealous.

it actually goes "Imitation is the sincerest of flattery" and i dont see a bunch of people out there acting like d-bags so there is no reason for you to be flattered. Another little fun fact that hasnt been mentioned yet is that Burger WAS THE NUMBER 1 SEED! You are right, sometimes the best player dosent win. This was not one of those cases...

I've watched both Ryan Burger and Marcus Hansen play and I can tell you that Marcus speaks the truth!!! He is the superior player but this time he had just completed a more tiring game, not to mention his shoulder injury. I cant believe we are even having this discussion!!! Marcus owns the record for most consecutive titles. Sure he happened to lose this one game but he is and was the superior player.

Adam,
Maybe everyone has a$$holes but not everyone has to be one!!! I dont even know if you are real tennis follower or not but trust me, I follow Hansen pretty closely and he is better. Take it to the bank!!!

How's that saying go "Jealousy is the highest form of flattery"....

If thats true then I guess I owe all you posters a big thank you!!!

I have only played 5 matches against Ryan. You cant really count this one given the circumstances. Sometimes the best player just doesnt win I guess. For those that are bagging on the Columbus tournament. You probably dont know a tennis racket from a spatula (aka burger flipper hahah). This is a high profile tournament and winning it is a great accomplishment. Winning it multiple years in a row is far more impressive though.

this article is Hilarious! must not have been anything else to write about

p.s. Columbus isn't exactly a 'high-grade" tournament

Ok....so you are now 1-4 against him. Now I love a good excuse as much as the next person. Please explain the other 3 losses. The one victory must have been the one time that both sides were equally rested and hydrated. Veggie Burger!!!! Rah!!!

Adam,

When Ryan Burger wins 6 in a row, then you can talk. My hat is off to him. He beat me this time. If the situations were reversed that day it would have been a different story. Call it an excuse if you want, but it is the truth and if you were there then you know its true!!!

Your Dad dosnt count, and I was there to see Ryan so i dont know what "crowd" you are talking about. As i stated before, Burger did have a tough second match. Excuses are like a$$holes.....

The bottom line here is that Burger was very fortunate to not have to use as much energy in his second match and unfortunately I did. That's the way it goes though. It's unfortunate that this would happen as I was trying to extend my record but that is part of what makes the record so amazing in the first place.

I will get Burger next year and start a new streak. Just remember who that crowd was there to see!!!!

Marcus, please continue with the burger jokes!! They are funny because it is both a type of food and his last name. (Facetious). Your jokes are like your serve...weak and faulty.

Marcus, Dont you find it somewhat strange that you are metaphorically talking about eating another grown man and referring to him as "juicy"??????

I'm going to have my burger with all the toppings and its going to be juicy. Oh YEAH!!!!!!

Burger is twice the player that Marcus is. Hansens on court behavior rivals that of a 5 year old who was just told that he or she couldn't go play outside after dinner. I didn't know such a record even existed and that he held it. Had I known about this record, I would have made sure it was not touched last year! To say that the Columbus tournament is the best in the state besides Lincoln or Omaha is a joke. Kearney has better, GI is better, and Fremont is way better than all of them. I'd say holding this record is the equivilent of holding the record for most home runs in minor league baseball history....so here's to you Crash!

Dont let the quotes or the comments fool you, Ryan Burger out played Hansen in every aspect of the game in that final match. Luckily he had that hard semi-final match to provide excuses, otherwise this atricle would just read "record holding tennis player gets beat by better player". What Hansen fails to mention in his comment about Burger's semi-final match is that the oppenent had to withdraw in the middle of the 3rd set and that the 1st set went to a tiebreaker. It was an extremly hard fought match and would have made for a much more exciting finals then the actual one did.

Good story, bad performance by myself. Even though I may not win the tournament consistently anymore, I feel I am still consistently entertaining, it was the biggest crowd I've ever seen at a tennis tournament in Nebraska. Hands off to Burger, he played great and is a real class act. I haven't beaten him since the finals of the cornhusker state games in 07, I'm 1-4 against him now lifetime. I played David Northy in the semi’s, I played and beat him in the finals of the last two tournaments I played (Omaha indoor and outdoor), but this was our best match yet, Ryan Burger owes him a beer or two, especially since Burger’s semi final opponent defaulted due to cramps. Burger told me he'll be back for the tournament next year, in which case, I'll be having Burger for breakfast, and it's going to be delicious!!
