Former University of Nebraska-Lincoln student Marcus Hansen was unable to break a United States Tennis Association record on Sunday.

Going for his seventh straight title at the Columbus Open the former Cornhusker club tennis player was unable to rebound from a long semi-final and dropped his final match in straight sets 6-2 6-1 to Ryan Burger.

Whose record was Hansen chasing?

His own.

Last year, Hansen won the Columbus Open for a sixth consecutive time breaking the previous record of five straight title defenses.

On Sunday after the loss, he reflected on his own dominance.

“My six-year reign is now over,” Hansen said. “It was good while it lasted.”

Hansen was the odds on favorite to repeat at the event again this after he had won two tournaments earlier this year.

Hansen has 13 titles in his career. He won’t dwell on not having 14.

“The semi-final match I played this year was the best match that I ever played at the Open,” said Hansen.

His semi-final match was nearly four hours long. During the course of the match he said he hurt his shoulder and struggled to fight through.

Bad shoulder aside, he prevailed in three sets, giving him a shot at breaking his own record.

Hansen said the competition at the Columbus Open was the best that it has ever been while he played.

“The competition in the Columbus Open is the best in the state of Nebraska except for the Omaha or Lincoln tournaments,” Hansen said.

I Am the Flag of the
United States
Of America

I am the flag of the United States of America.
My name is Old Glory.
I fly atop the world's tallest buildings.
I stand watch in America's halls of justice.
I fly majestically over institutions of learning.
I stand guard with power in the world.
Look up and see me.

I stand for peace, honor, truth and justice.
I stand for freedom.
I am confident.
I am arrogant.
I am proud.
When I am flown with my fellow banners,
My head is a little higher,
My colors a little truer.
I bow to no one!
I am recognized all over the world.
I am worshipped - I am saluted.
I am loved - I am revered.
I am respected - and I am feared.
I have fought in every battle of every war for more then 200 years. I was flown at Valley Forge, Gettysburg, Shiloh and Appomattox.
I was there at San Juan Hill, the trenches of France,
in the Argonne Forest, Anzio, Rome and the beaches of Normandy.
Guam, Okinawa, Korea and KheSan, Saigon, Vietnam know me.
I'm presently in the mountains of Afganistan and the hot and dusty deserts of Iraq and wherever freedom is needed.
I led my troops, I was dirty, battleworn and tired,
But my soldiers cheered me and I was proud.
I have been burned, torn and trampled on the streets of countries I have helped set free.
It does not hurt for I am invincible.
I have been soiled upon, burned, torn and trampled in the streets of my country.
And when it's done by those Whom I've served in battle - it hurts.
But I shall overcome - for I am strong.
I have slipped the bonds of Earth and stood watch over the uncharted frontiers of space from my vantage point on the moon.
I have borne silent witness to all of America's finest hours.
But my finest hours are yet to come.
When I am torn into strips and used as bandages for my wounded comrades on the battlefield,
When I am flown at half-mast to honor my soldier,
Or when I lie in the trembling arms of a grieving parent
at the grave of their fallen son or daughter,

I am proud.

This looks like an article that Marcus wrote himself. The English is terrible and would be much more fluent if somebody who had the intelligence level of a grapefruit had written it. I may have lost to Marcus in singles this year but i am not going to bitch about my shoulder hurting. The fact that Marcus is complaining about not having recovery time shows his character. A good player either would have rolled the semi-final match knowing that he had to play the final or he would have stepped up to the task at hand. Look at the Australian Open Match this year Marcus. Recovery time is no reason to lose a match. I suppose that is your reason for losing to my son and I in doubles also????

I love how not one person besides Ryan Burger and myself, have the balls to put their name on this article, again, the very first comment was mine, the one denialing all the other comments was mine, and this is my final comment, I shall never read or care to read any more comments unless somone has the actual balls to post their name, they are not creditable. When a story and people want to become credible with what they say, put your name, Marcus Slayer is an idiot. The GI person you are referring to is Jamie Holmes, who I beat last summer but did lose to at the state games in 05. I left Concordia due to my mother's health, and it all worked out because I got a chance to be a part of the greatest University on God's green earth. Even though I went to UNO this year, I still bleed husker red and always will, I wore husker clothing every match while at UNO, and at Concordia, and at every tournament I play in, my coaches hated it but they understood, that's the way I am, and they understand, I do things my way. Whoever Marcus Slayer is, have the balls to say who you actually are to have come credibility, stop hiding because you are scared of my retalliation would destroy you and you have pittifly tried to destroy me with false facts and exagerrated stories, their is a facebook group for people to do that about me already 189 members as well, but what people don't realize, I used to thrive on things like this, it fueled me, but this is just commical, no real reference with a credible name, sorry, I'll read the Columbus Telegram's story where people post their real names

I was unaware that you could write your own article and someone would actually publish it. What is the communication network coming to these days? The Daily Nebraskan just lost a lot of respect around the state for this article. This just shows that immaturity and arrogance are still present once someone graduates from high school. Isn't it true that you have to be a Husker first to consider yourself a former Husker second? It is my understanding that Marcus did not even make the Husker team even though he was given a pity chance. I know and have talk to Coach McDermott about this article and the very immaturity and arrogance I mentioned previously is one of the reasons Marcus was never a Husker. That and he could never beat younger better Nebraska high school students from Grand Island and Lincoln. (Cornhusker State Games ring a bell?) Club team does not make you a former Husker. After reading this article, I lost a lot of respect for Marcus. I hope that not all tennis athletes from Columbus are like him. Frankly, I feel sorry for anyone who had to coach Marcus and put up with this on a daily basis. The Columbus Open is a good, respectable tournament and hopefully this article does not keep great sportsmanship-minded athletes from participating in it in the future. I would like to end with this. Before trying to make the UNL tennis team, Marcus was a student at Concordia University in Seward. Does anyone know why he did not continue to go there? Don't let him convince you he wanted to go elsewhere. My sources at Concordia said he was kicked out for cheating. Hmmmm! Something else to add to you character. Right Marcus?

So summer recreation tennis makes the news at the DN? For real? It's been awhile since I was a student at UNL but it looks like the quality of coverage has slipped. This guy played club level tennis at UNL and it's newsworthy now? Did he even graduate from UNL (former student it says)? Did he drop out to pursue a professional tennis career? (Obviously not)

I never realized you can rank the hotbeds of tennis in Nebraska. Maybe Mr. Hansen should step out of his comfort zone and compete in Omaha or Lincoln, if those are the 'hot spots.'

Also, successful, confident, and respectable athletes don't whine about sore shoulders/hurt pride. Suck it up. This isn't little league and your daddy isn't coaching you.

Why wasn't Ryan Burger interviewed?

I have never met Marcus Hansen and I probably never will, unless I start hanging out at Mall Food courts and Middle School playgrounds. Seriously, how old is this guy? From reading his comments I honestly would think about 13-14, and I am being completely serious. I have to give Mr. Burger serious props for not only winning in straight sets but for resisting the urge to jump the net and give this guy a beating that he desperatly needs. My unsolicited advice to Mr. Nathan is to go look in the mirror and decide if you like the person who is looking back at you. If you are completely honest with yourself about the answer, then you can start the slow process of re-evaluating your personality and making life-altering (for the better) changes that will allow you to become a better person who can develop, build, and maintain meaningful relationships with other adults. These changes should also have a positive effect on your social behavior and general demeanor in all settings. I honestly wish you the best of luck in this difficult process, most people don't have the self-awareness or humility to pull it off, I sincerely hope that you will.

Horrible story. Did marcus hansen give michael schaefer a blow job in exchange for this piece of crap? You know what would be nice? If the DN actually wrote something newsworthy, interesting and intelligent.

Does anyone else think that "Hansen fan" and all the other pro-Marcus Hansen comments sound *JUST* like him??? I can't be the only one who sees this, right?

Go Burger! Marcus is a joke, both on and off the court. And not a funny HAHA joke.

I don't know Ryan Burger, but I am willing to bet that he's way way better than Marcus Hansen. at the following tasks:

- Making and Keeping friends.
- Having sex with women.
- Being invited to social events.
- Not getting "excited" when the getting a physical at the doctor's office.
- Making babies.
- Being desired in general.
- Tennis

The irony of this all is this-- who would have imagined that Marcus Hansen wouldn't be better at playing with balls than any other dude? It's a crazy world we live in.

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed reading this article and the many, many comments on it, so now I’ll make my peace with it. First of all, the tournament, as well as the final match was not a walk in the park. For the person who commented on the Kearney Open being more competitive, you couldn’t be more wrong. I was about to win that tournament and play David Northy in the finals, the same guy Hansen beat in the semi’s in 3 sets in the Columbus Open. That aside, I’ve played in the Kearney and GI open before, this year was the first time I’ve played in the Columbus Open, and Hansen’s quote about being the best tournament outside of Lincoln and Omaha is accurate. As for Marcus, it’s funny you have so many people to defend you, I know that’s not your voice in most of the comments, and not surprising considering the crowd that was there, everyone either loves or hates you, except for me, I’m still debating haha. Marcus told me he has only won 2 Omaha tournaments this year, he knows the competition in Lincoln is far superior, maybe if he wins one here he would have got the 1 seed haha, I hope to see you in the finals of the state games, so I can beat ya when you are healthy. It’ll be a different result then our last state games final, better practice up and stay healthy so that story can make print, not just the internet. I guess we are turning into a big Nebraska tennis rivalry, maybe next time I can get interviewed, but if I don’t, or there isn’t another article, this is what I would have said “Well, when Marcus is healthy it’s always a good match and it’s always a lot of fun to play him, but it’s always more fun to beat him, I think he is getting used to it.”

I find it entertaining how many comments a tennis story got, it had to be an entertaining tournament, for tennis. But the best aspect of this story isn't the record, the players, the crowd ect, but how the title has a typo ("Huskers" shouldn't be plural) AND this story didn't even make print in the paper, the editor sure is doing a good job.

All these complaints about sore shoulders and exhaustion--not to mention the claim that the results would have been reversed had the situation been different--are ridiculous. It is part of the game; injuries and exhaustion are the reality of being an athlete. They must be taken in stride and dealt with. You wouldn't ever witness an athlete such as Michael Phelps or Federer quipping about a loss and blaming it on the fact that they swam more races or played more matches in a given amount of time than their opponent. Please, try to maintain some integrity.

....and by the way, if Marcus is such a great Champion and says Columbus is such a great tournament, someone should ask him why he won't play open level in any other tournament through out the year! He plays 4.5 stuff everywhere else and doesn't always win. That tells you the caliber at the US Open....I mean Columbus!

Ha. Obviously he wore you down in a grueling 6-2 6-1 match...and clearly the better player rarely wins if his record against you is 4-1. D-bag, while not mature, is definitaly applicable.

Marcus are you serious? The Columbus tournament has ALWAYS been one of the biggest joke tournaments in Nebraska. And to keep saying theres a 'crowd' and 'great' competition is making me laugh so hard i think i just split my side open :) .........if you've ever watched the show Seinfeld, George Costanza refers to his boss as a "laughing stock" .......do the math and put 2 and 2 together (you should be able to do the math because you're the ALMIGHTY columbus champion of 6 years past, which means you should be ready for Division 1 tennis right????) You need a reality check my friend.........are playing satellites for big money???? NO, so just play, quite BRAGGING and shut your trap.
