Nebraska linebacker Will Compton suffered a foot injury at practice Thursday that will sideline him indefinitely, said coach Bo Pelini.

"We have informed his family about the injury, and we will know more about Will's status going forward in the next few days," Pelini said in a statement issued Thursday night.

Compton, a sophomore considered a favorite to start Saturday's season opener against Western Kentucky, will likely be supplanted in the lineup by junior college transfer Lavonte David, sophomore Eric Martin or junior Mathew May. He's the second returning starter linebacker to suffer an injury this preseason, after Sean Fisher went down with a season-ending leg injury.

Compton appeared in all 14 games as a redshirt freshman last season and started eight. The Bonne Terre, Mo., native registered 40 tackles and shared a sack while playing primarily against the run.
