officially: The University of Iowa

location: Iowa City

population: 68,903

undergrad enrollment: 20,574 (fall 2009)

annual tuition: $6,824 in-state, $22,198 out-of-state

u.s. news ranking: 72nd nationally, 29th among public universities

notable alumni: Tom Brokaw, Diablo Cody, Lou Holtz, Ashton Kutcher, Terry O'Quinn, Brandon Routh, Bob Stoops, Gene Wilder, Tennessee Williams

distance from unl: 303 miles

best way to drive: Take the five-hour drive on I-80 East. Iowa is easily the shortest conference road trip.

best way to fly: No need. Delta and United do offer flights that connect in Minneapolis, but why waste all that time and money?

sports mascot: Hawkeyes

football: 12 Big Ten titles, 24 bowls, 1 national title

all-time series: Nebraska leads 26-12-3, but NU has only faced Iowa five times in the last 20 years. The Huskers are 4-1 in those matchups and have won by an average of 37 points per game.

The Hawkeyes are No. 9 in both polls right now after topping Eastern Illinois 37-7 to open the season. Last year's squad won the Orange Bowl, and this year's could be even better.

Iowa is led by star defensive end Adrian Clayborn, quarterback Ricky Stanzi and receiver Derrell Johnson-Koulianos — and luckily for Husker fans, all three are seniors.

When Nebraska joins the Big Ten, Iowa will likely become one of its biggest new rivals, and the Hawkeyes will replace Colorado as NU's season-finale showdown in 2011 and 2012.

men's basketball: 10 Big Ten titles, 3 Final Four appearances

Iowa won the Big Ten tournament in 2006 but have slipped a bit ever since. Steve Alford resigned a year later to take over at New Mexico, and Iowa went 38-58 in three seasons under his replacement, Todd Lickliter. New coach Fran McCaffery takes over after leading Siena College to the NCAA tournament in three straight seasons. His first Hawkeyes team features four returning starting, including leading scorer and Iowa City native Matt Gatens.

volleyball: 2 NCAA tournament appearances

After finishing dead last in the Big Ten last year at 13-19, Iowa's off to a 5-1 start this season. Junior middle blocker Mallory Husz leads Iowa in kills, hitting percentage, blocks and  her 16 kills helped push the Hawkeyes past Saint Louis 3-2 last weekend. Nebraska is a perfect 14-0 all-time against Iowa.

best other sports: At Iowa, wrestling is king. The program has produced 34 Big Ten titles and 23 national championships, including three-straight under coach Tom Brands, a 1996 Olympic gold medalist. Former Iowa coach Dan Gable is a legend in the sport after he led the Hawkeyes to nine straight national titles from 1978 to 1986.
