officially: Indiana University

location: Bloomington, Ind.

population: 69,291

undergrad enrollment: 32,490 (fall 2009)

annual tuition: $9,028 in-state, $27,689 out-of-state

u.s. news ranking: 75th nationally, 32nd among public universities

notable alumni: Kevin Kline, Mark Cuban, Jared Fogle, Will Shortz, Meg Cabot, Trent Green, Mark Spitz

distance from unl: 638 miles

best way to drive: It's an 11-hour drive, so you're probably not going to want to. If your budget demands you hit the road, though, take Highway 2 to the I-29 merger just past Nebraska City, then take US-36 and I-72 the rest of the way .

best way to fly: Your best option is flying into Indianapolis and making an hour drive to Bloomington. Airtran and Midwest Airlines both currently offer nice roundtrip direct flight options from Omaha to Indy for less than $250.

sports mascot: Hoosiers

director's cup ranking: 43rd (8th in Big Ten)

football: 2 Big Ten titles, 9 bowl games

all-time series: Indiana leads the series 9-7-3. They last met in 1978, a 69-17 blowout win by Nebraska.

NU isn't scheduled to face Indiana in 2011 or 2012, and that's probably for the best for the Hoosiers. Since going 7-6 and earning an Insight Bowl berth in 2007, Indiana has lost 14 of its last 16 Big Ten contests. Led by one of the conference's best receiving duos in juniors Tandon Doss and Damario Belcher, IU should sweep an easy nonconference slate this year. After that, though, bowl eligibility certainly won't come easy, since the Hoosiers only play three Big Ten games at home.

men's basketball: 5 national titles, 20 Big Ten titles

The legendary program has fallen on hard times ever since former coach Kelvin Sampson and his assistants broke NCAA rules and got the school three years of probation. The coach that replaced Sampson, Tom Crean, inherited a gutted roster and has had to completely rebuild. IU is 16-46 in Crean's two seasons, but at least he's got a star to build around in sophomore Maurice Creek, who led the nation's freshmen in scoring at 16.4 ppg last season before a knee injury ended his season after only 12 games.

volleyball: 4 NCAA tournament appearances

The Hoosiers went 17-17 last year and 6-14 in league play, but they've started the year off well with a three-match sweep at the season-opening Georgia Tech Tournament. But IU hasn't been to an NCAA tournament since 2002, and no Hoosiers team has ever advanced past the second round. Senior middle blocker Ashley Benson was a unanimous All-Big Ten selection and become IU's first-ever All-American when she earned third-team honors last year.

best other sports: IU has seven national titles in men's soccer, and its swimming and diving program has won 23 Big Ten titles and produced 79 individual national champions.
