At the Daily Nebraskan, we want to congratulate the N VISION Party for last night's victory.

We don't have to tell you what a great responsibility it is to be representing the student body here at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. The Association of Students of the University of Nebraska has prerogative to research, discuss and vote on issues they feel pertinent to a better college experience for everyone. And with that goal in mind, we wish the soon-to-be executive branch the best of luck. With all economic strain on students, worries of the future and a rapidly changing world around us, it won't be easy to please everyone or anyone.

But the students have spoken and have found you to be the most qualified for the job. And we stand behind that decision, as we are students and ASUN represents us, as well.

And looking back on the triumphs and short-comings of previous administrations, the editorial board of the Daily Nebraskan only asks one thing of the newly elected representatives: We want to know what's going on.

We have given you the opportunity to lead. Now, you must meet the student body by creating a friendly, approachable tone for your time in office. It's easy to forget that we are all just students, all trying to educate ourselves and lead successful lives when we graduate. You, the newly elected representatives, are no more students than the staff here at the Daily Nebraskan, members of other clubs and sports or even the students who aren't involved in extracurriculars. That latter category is arguably the most important one.

We challenge you to reverse the negative things said about ASUN, not in a defensive political fashion, but as students connecting with other students. Make the reputation of ASUN that of an association willing to accommodate, understand and empathize.

More often than not, and not specifically from this newspaper, ASUN has been accused of being a closed-door operation. Only recently have the meetings been recorded and very rarely can anyone on campus hold a conversation about what happened at this week's meeting.

Together, the Daily Nebraskan would like to pledge the best resources we have to increasing the exposure of ASUN and the great ideas posed by the incumbent executive party.

The Daily Nebraskan, much like ASUN, does its best to deal with issues that greatly affect students. Allow us the resources and openness to report accurately on the work you will be doing.

We are not the enemy, but a tool for greater communication between elected officials — who have a limited amount of time to speak directly with students — and the rest of the university.
