I am an alum of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and was once a Journalism student there – B.A./News-Editorial. Be that as it may, I’d like to submit a poem I wrote following the NU vs CU football game last week.

Ode to Henery

An exaggerated Adam’s apple and spindle-like arms
Shoulder pads teetering loosely on bone,
upon a frame you wouldn’t lean a table on.
The face, like slate, so chiseled and gaunt,
His legs a bit bowed for an arrow-straight jaunt.
The football ahead him, but far from the goal,
The wrinkles of coaches, stretched to their souls.
The time-out now over, the clock nearing one.
The crowd all agaze in their hand-stretched coats.
The coldness afoot was soon stomped away
As the kick of the skinny kid put some warmth in our day.
The ball, having spun, rightly bounced to the wall,
Over decibels rising, a record did fall.
