LETTER TO EDITOR: Creighton commentator can’t hide anti-NU slant

Published: Sunday, February 15, 2009

Updated: Monday, February 16, 2009 00:02

I'm writing today to voice what was once disdain but is now more elation for the ongoing negative comments by Matt Perrault, voice of Creighton basketball, both on his radio show and on his blog (mattperrault.blogspot.com) against Nebraska basketball and more specifically, Doc Sadler. For a guy that makes his living by supposedly reporting sports "without a spin," his points of view are subjectively sinister.

I just got done reading Mr. Perrault's most recent blog featuring yet another backhanded comment toward NU basketball. Gotta tell you, while it used to annoy me, I absolutely love it now! Nebraska basketball is under Matt's skin so deep, and I couldn't enjoy it more. When Matt Perrault feels so compelled to throw a slight at NU for seemingly every story written about them, well, that just shows me it's killing him.

To put it best, everything Matt says about NU basketball is filled with such a compulsive defensiveness, it couldn't be more apparent how much sleep he's losing over the fact that Nebraska's stock is on an upward tick. It's now becoming a joy to watch and listen to.

Matt can share and post his one-sided comments about the past irrelevance of the NU basketball program all he wants, but the fact of the matter is that a substantial majority of people just laugh at him now. Credibility? Being objective? Without a spin? They've been gone for a while.

Fact of the matter is, people quit listening or taking what Matt says with any seriousness when his positions became too biased and driven by his hatred for Nebraska basketball. Stated differently, when going on his typical NU rant, do his listeners, Creighton and Nebraska fans alike, take what Matt says with any seriousness anymore? Or do they now just roll their eyes because they know his views are driven by his deep-rooted hatred for, and jealousy of, Doc Sadler?

Has it affected Matt to the point where he now comes across as a defensive radio host with an obvious bias that seems to be on the verge of an addictive obsessiveness? Yes, indeed.

Maybe Matt's just trying to appeal to that diehard Creighton fan base that hates NU (usually college-aged students) but I hope Mr. Perrault is well aware that NU-CU isn't Auburn-Alabama. However, I actually do not think what Matt is saying is an "act" meant to incite; rather, it's pure hatred underscored with obvious insecurity. Well, so be it. Just hope it doesn't come back to bite him in the butt, because it sure looks like things are heading that way.

Evan, it took you that long to realize not to give any merit to what Matt is saying?? I quit listening the day Matt Perrault, a big time Boston sports guy, said that Oscar Robertson was one of the best Celtics ever on the air. Yes, the same Oscar Robertson that never played for the Celtics during his career. I recommend you stop listening too, otherwise you're going to get stressed out.

Of course Matt is jealous. CU hasn't beat a rated team in over 2 years, nor have they beaten a tournament team. Last year NU beat 6 teams that went to the NCAA tournament. Getting a bunch of wins through beating crappy Valley teams isn't much to hang your hat on Matt.

How was Creighton's football team 10 years ago? oh wait....

Bottom line is Matt has no idea what he says half the time. I believe he does it on purpose just to get a rise out of people which makes most tune in to his horrible show. Fact of the matter is Boston sucks, the Patriots suck, buying Uggs sucks (and talking about it on a sports show), wearing a colar popped up if you are over 21 sucks, wearing sweater vests and dockers sucks, talking and texting during a game sucks, worrying about drinking in the open bowl vs. supporting your team sucks, the MO Valley sucks, and the red sox suck. Trav and Brian and Bugsy rule! I got your big 12 counter here. Can't wait for the excuses. 54-52!

i like prefer husker basketball to jays basketball, but like them both. just because you support jays basketball doesn't mean you can't think MP is a tool.

god bless you, evan, for bringing to light this fact.

Oh, "recent" regularity; certainly not the 2 wins Creighton accounted for during the the 90's!!!

If anyone's jealous, it's Matt. He had nothing to say about Nebraska until 3 years ago when things started turning around for Nebraska hoops; nothing!!!! Now that they're taking some attention away from Creighton basketball, after all, CU's always been the state's "basketball school", this has got Matt and the CU fans nervous.

And, to borrow your own logic, if you don't like any opposition to MP, then don't read articles on the subject.

Change the station if you don't like Perrault. Go listen to those two little school-girls squeel and giggle on 1620 from 2-6 then. The jealousy from the husker fans is enormous, just because you've had success in football 10 years ago, doesn't make you a good basketball team, sorry.

By regularity I think he was referring to Creighton winning 9 out of the last 12 regular season match ups.

If you dont like what is being talked about on 590, change the station, its a free country.

Matt is a joke. He is jealous of the NU team and for whatever reason loves to
rub it in cause the jays play in a weak conference and thinks they are good
cause they get 20 wins. Fact is Matt loves to post stuff on his blog even more
now that he doesn't let others respond. Most of the replies were great points
to which Matt had no answers to. Funny thing is that he is like most CU fans
that love Husker Football but don't support the Bball team. Makes no sense at
all. I really enjoy when Trav and Matt S. and Brian disagree with all his
points when he tries rippping on NU. His show is a joke and that's why I've
started listening to the zone because it's more entertaining. I got sick of
everything coming back to the patriots in all his arguements and him
consistantly ripping the NU bball program just because he has a sick obsession
with Dana Altman and wishes they could be married. I'm sure he alerted the
station. I'm sure Evan poses a threat. Seriously...Get a life Matt. How you
still have a program on amazes me. And why is Matt searching this info out.
Sounds like he is the stalker.

"Creighton beats Nebraska with regularity"

What data are you using here??? The overall series is NU 24 and CU 18. Hmmmm?? Moreover, winning the Valley and thus getting many more chances to win NCAA tournament games is much easier than qualifying out of the Big 12 or Big 8.

Perrault won't be around much longer. He's been drunk dailing Jade McCarthy again.

Fact of the matter is that Nebraska basketball fans have an issue with the fact that their "Big Time" program has never seen the success Creighton has in the Missouri Valley. You can argue all the semantics of Creighton plays "lesser" teams, but that doesn't change the fact that Creighton beats Nebraska with regularity and Nebraska has yet to win a single NCAA tournament game. The simple truth here is that the Nebraska basketball program hasn't seen success since Danny Nee was coaching Eric Piatkowski back in the early 90's. Bottom line is that Evan is a Nebraska fan and has issues with the fact that Matt talks a lot about the team he covers for his radio station. Why are we surprised by this? People in the state of Nebraska have issues when it comes to basketball because they hold onto their love of Nebraska football and can't handle having one of their programs at the same level as a "Mid Major". Root for the team of your choosing and move on with your life, someone is always going to disagree with you.

Very passionate, but very short-sighted. As much as Evan Trofolz clams Perrault has agenda against Doc Sadler, he seems to have one himself. Matt is not a "commentator," he hosts a opinion-based talk radio program on the station that happens to carry Creighton Basketball broadcasts. Matt's opinions are his own, not reflective of the respective fanbases.

Second of all, how is this any different than what 1620 AM does using Evan's logic? The sports media in this state has an undoubted pro-NU bias, which isn't that suprising. Mike'l Severe openly admits his hatred for Creighton in all things, not just basketball, almost daily on the radio. He takes every opportunity to belittle, insult, demean CU athletics. But that is fine and justified because is doesn't hurt Nebraska or Evan's fragile ego.

Basically, "without the spin" means not placating Husker fans all the time, which is what they are used to.

Yes, Mr. Perrault has this strange obsession, which explains you writing a letter to the editor in a newspaper. Yes, he has the problem.
