Emily Zimmer, president of the Association of Students of the University of Nebraska, had those three points for senators when they convened on Wednesday night, with two weeks remaining in their administration.

With elections for the 2009-2010 student government wrapped up, executive members focused on the upcoming transition and began forming recommendations for their replacements.

Zimmer, a senior political science major, stressed the importance of a good transition, saying a poor one could cripple ASUN for years into the future.

“As your parting gift to ASUN, let’s help the next group get three times as much stuff done,” she said.

L.J. McElravy, a graduate student in leadership education and chairman of the Campus Wellness Ad-hoc Committee, discussed future options in handling the state of three campus buildings, the City and East Campus Recreation Centers and the University Health Center.

A referendum gauging student opinion on an $80 per semester per student fee increase to finance building projects and renovations in these three buildings failed during the March 4 election.

While the wellness committee will “dissolve” March 25 as the BRIGHT party closes its administration, the issue of how to handle the three buildings isn’t going away.

McElravy said “creative options” for funding could be looked into. The University of Colorado runs its health facilities on mandated student insurance. Requiring the University Health Center to run in a similar way would provide extra dollars to work with, McElravy said.

The building in the direst condition is the East Campus Rec. Its issues include broken plumbing, lack of air-conditioning and an array of structural problems.

Senators estimated the building can survive for perhaps five more years before significant funds will need to be pumped into it.

“If we’re going to have an East Campus where students live, we need to provide facilities of a quality that we’re proud to associate with the university,” Zimmer said.

During the executive committee that followed senate, ASUN members also talked about how the incoming CONNECT party could structure the committee overseeing the next official Husker football T-shirt, to ensure the group is effective.

“You’re still student representatives until March 25,” Zimmer told senators. “You’re not (lame) ducks. You still have time.”
