Today is a technological age. People are rarely seen without their cell phones, many of which allow users to access the Internet. Laptops have become a necessity for college students, as well as for business professionals. This makes it easier to do work on the go or to study wherever.

But this can also be difficult to do if there is no wireless network access, or Wi-Fi.

On the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus, wireless access is available everywhere.

"Our intention is that it is available everywhere on East and City Campus: in every building, classroom and even in the common outdoor areas," said Michael Ruhrdanz, director of communications and operations for UNL's Information Services.

If Information Services workers are alerted that Wi-Fi is inaccessible somewhere on campus, they will expand it to that area.

Wi-Fi on the UNL campus is free to all students, faculty and staff, as well as to campus visitors. In the case of campus visitors, they must register as a visitor before gaining access to the UNL network.

For students wanting to get away from campus, there are many places in the downtown area that have free Wi-Fi. Some of the more obvious choices are the coffee shops.

Starbucks, on the corner of 12th and P streets, offers free Wi-Fi access. Also on P Street is The Mill, which requires no password to gain access to the Wi-Fi.

"If you are here and you have a computer, you have access," said Patrick Fries, an employee at The Mill.

Yet another coffee shop on P Street is The Coffee House. But unlike The Mill, The Coffee House requires a password to access the network, said Chris Preston, an employee at The Coffee House.

There are also restaurants in the downtown area that offer free Wi-Fi access.

For those who love to chow down on buffalo wings and study math at the same time, Buffalo Wild Wings on P Street has free Wi-Fi access. Another casual dining place that could provide a studying atmosphere, as well as access to free Wi-Fi, is Applebee's, which is located on Q Street.

Studying history could go along with eating different types of pasta, so Noodles and Company, located on 14th Street, offers free Wi-Fi access without requiring a password.

Students with a craving for tacos can connect to the Wi-Fi at Amigos on Q Street.

Long gone are the days of Ethernet cords in residence halls. Now, students can study with wireless on and off campus.
