Last week, the H1N1 virus, commonly referred to as swine flu, made its first reported appearance at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

A visiting youth attending a conference on City Campus was diagnosed with Influenza A on June 24, and was confirmed as a “probable” H1N1 case by local health authorities.

According to emergency.unl.edu, others attending the conference who came in contact with the illness were treated. The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services reported that the infected individual has fully recovered after returning home.

The health department has reported 111 cases in Nebraska thus far with 28 new cases last week.

“The number is growing all over the country and we think that with the fall flu season we will see even more cases,” said Marla Augustine, the public information officer for the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.

The health department suggests that Nebraskans continue to wash their hands regularly and practice cough etiquette. College students should also take precautions.

“A lot of college students live in group settings, so I know it’s hard to isolate yourself when you’re sick; however, if you are infected you must try not to spread the illness,” Augustine said.
