Spring break is usually a time to relax and shake off the stress that has been accumulating during second semester.

While most students are getting their wardrobe and itinerary together, making sure reservations are in place and picking out swimsuits, there are also some other things to consider before going on spring break.

To educate students on the risks and dangers of spring break, a Safe Spring Break Fair was held in the Nebraska Union on Wednesday.

The fair was sponsored the University Health Center’s Health Education Department and Medical Clinic, Husker Choices and the College of Hair Design.

Whether they will be lying on a beach, carving down a mountain or just hanging out at home, the Health Education Department has prepared a special kit filled with objects to help students have the safest spring break possible.

“Our message is to encourage students to have a great and safe spring break,” said Debra Henderson, wellness educator at the Health Center.

Visitors to the booth received a water bottle filled with a toothbrush and toothpaste, sunscreen, first aid supplies, a condom, a brochure for safe and smart drinking and a survey for healthy sleep.

The Heath Education Department has also compiled a list of tips on its Web site to help students make educated decisions while on spring break. Some of these tips include: Practice safe driving behavior, use sunscreen at the right times, wear proper clothes when skiing and drink responsibly.

But the Health Center isn’t the only place students get spring break advice. Jenna Wiese, a freshman general studies major who is planning to spend her break in South Padre Island, Texas, said her parents have also been telling her how to have a safe spring break.

“My parents keep telling me that I must be with someone in my group at all times,” Wiese said. “They also said that they would appreciate the occasional update.”

While spring break is a time for students to have fun, Henderson said the UHC wants to make sure students remember to stay safe at their vacation destinations.

“It is a time to have fun, relax, enjoy friendships, but most importantly, it is also about protecting yourself from dangerous situations,” Henderson said. “It is our role to educate students on making responsible choices and empowering them to make safe and healthy decisions.”
