Santorum speech excites crowd

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum visited the auditorium of the Nebraska Union on Tuesday to present his idea that Americans do not truly understand why the United States is at war.

Santorum is passing through the University of Nebraska-Lincoln as a part of his college campus tour on which he describes to students what he believes are the dangers in not knowing what is going on in the Middle East.

“I talk to college students because I can have an intellectual conversation, and they usually don’t agree with me,” Santorum said. “I like to state my case (to students) and let them decide who to believe.”

Santorum was a member of the United States Senate from 1994-2007. He believes that the Bush administration made a huge mistake in not informing Americans exactly what’s happening with the wars and who America is fighting. He said the Obama administration is making the same mistake.

“America has little information and Bush went out of his way to mystify who the enemy really is,” Santorum said. “Is that true, are we really fighting ‘terrorists?’”

Santorum also gave the audience a lecture on Islam. When he asked the audience who knew the difference between the Sunnis and the Shi’ites, three audience members raised their hands. Santorum said this proved his point – America has been at war with Islam for seven years and doesn’t know the two branches.

Santorum said he supported the war when it was unpopular because he thinks not fighting could destroy western civilization. He said he believes that Muslims are America’s enemy because they read their religion literally and apply it to real life, instead of in historical context.

The lecture continued when Santorum pointed out what he thought were the main differences between Christians and Muslims. Santorum said Christians, who believe in Jesus Christ, never governed or conquered anyone, but Mohammed was a warrior and killed people.

Santorum said he believes Muslims’ religious views cannot be changed or altered, so Middle Easterners reject American, democratic ideals.

“A democracy could not exist because Mohammed already made the perfect law,” Santorum said. “The Quran is perfect just the way it is, that’s why it is only written in Islamic.”

So the big question, Santorum said, is what are Americans afraid of? Being politically incorrect or offending someone?

Santorum blames Republicans and Democrats for not giving Americans the whole story.

Santorum received two standing ovations from the crowd.

“I agree that it is a major concern that we don’t know the whole truth, I certainly did not until today,” said Andrew McClure, a sophomore political science major.

“I have a lot of sympathy and fear because the United States could face dangerous predicaments,” said Mark Harrington, pastor at Horizons International Church in Lincoln. “I think that generations of failed leadership has caused much fear in Americans.”

Santorum said he wants people to learn to be more inquisitive of the government.

“I think that if every citizen was fully informed about the war, it would create a commonality between faiths,” Santorum said. “We can’t fear the truth, so why hide from it?”

I think it is great of the Daily Nebraskan to be reporting all viewpoints out there, as is the point of a newspaper. BUT if you are going to be writing about such a controversial speaker such as Santorum, at least get a reporter who can keep their facts straight. Alot of pieces in Ms. Gatz's article are no quoted correctly and some such as "America has been at war with Islam for seven years and doesn’t know the two branches" are completely untrue. For such a sensitive subject, the Daily Nebraskan should at least have a responsible and more professional journalist attached.

So is the reporter's crappy reporting being retracted yet? I can't stand Santorum as much as the next man, but it's pretty obvious he was misquoted. Nicole: get a digital recorder, especially if you're covering a someone like Dicky.

To weigh in on the ongoing debate about what "Islam" means:

Islam does not mean peace. It is from the same root as peace, but it does not MEAN peace. Islam is "submission, surrender, reconciliation." Muslim is from the same root and means "one who submits."
Look it up.

Every religion has its violent and non-violent incarnations. To think that one can proclaim what Islam "really" is forgets that religions are what people make of them. Islam is a religion of peace and of violence depending on whose interpretation you follow.

To clarify an earlier poster's incorrect comment: Islam DOES mean peace. Muslim means one who submits to the will of God. Does anyone agreeing with this uninformed being recall the crusades? Every major religion has a violent history. We can agree to disagree with each other so-called religious values, but lets at least be honest about the facts.

This reads like piss poor reporting (or perhaps aggenda driven). I wasn't there so I cannot attest to what Mr. Santorum's actual quotes were, but there is a lot of paraphrasing of important items such as:

"Santorum said he believes Muslims’ religious views cannot be changed or altered, so Middle Easterners reject American, democratic ideals."

"He said he believes that Muslims are America’s enemy because they read their religion literally and apply it to real life, instead of in historical context."

"America has been at war with Islam for seven years....."

I would think that the words RADICAL ISLAM, ISLAMOFACISM or some type of key words would have been included. I have heard him speak before and he has always used those key words to seperate out the peaceful muslims from those that are hardcore radicals. So I am left to determine A) Has Mr. Santorum taken a turn and thinks that all muslims are evil and we are at war with all of Islam or B) The reporter forgot to include those important words or C) The reporter has an aggenda to get out and would like to paint Mr. Santorum in the worst light by intentionally forgetting to use the key words.

I am leaning towards "C"

"[un]Reality," you are dead weight in a free society. You freeload on the efforts of people with sense like Santorum. If too many people thought like you, we'd all soon be speaking Arabic.

Santorum is an unbelievable moron, as a self-styled "expert" on this topic who refers the Qur'an as being written in "Islamic" and as reiterating that we are at war against "Islam." This is all true only in his completely demented head. Two standing ovations? For comic-relief value, I hope. It is truly incredible that he ever held any high office.

No one has commented on the Moslem TV station founder (in the U.S.) who said he was trying to build a bridge between the American public and Moslem community, and trying to get past the stereotypes of Moslems. Well, does anyone know what he did a few days ago? Probably not, since the media are censoring themselves. I'll clue everyone in. His wife filed for divorce, so he beheaded her. Those are just the facts. I bet someone will try to argue though.

Islam does not mean peace. Islam is from the word 'surrender' or 'submit'. As far as Muslims are concerned, there can only be peace when people surrender to the religion of Islam. So peace as the result of submission. I most languages that is not seen as peace, but as oppression.

For those who state that what dingbat actually said was that Jesus never governed or conquered anyone as compared to Mohammed, Mohammed never actually started a fight either. The power structure tried to kill him and his family, and when he conquered them, he converted them rather than executed them as was the custom in those days.

And the last time I checked, Santorum was spreading fear of terrorism and finding boogymen under every bed rather than stopping it.

I was there, he didn't say the Koran is written in Islamic, he said Arabic. At least quote the man correctly.

I pity the ignorant fool for being a Christian, just as i pity the "terrorists" were Muslim. Islam is a religion of peace and understanding.
-The very word "Islam" is means safe, peace. It is based on the word "Salam" which means the same as its Hebrew counterpart, "Shalom" , peace.

-The Quran is written in arabic, not "islamic". There is no such language called "islamic".

-There are more than 2 branches of Islam, only Sunni and Shia are talked about the most. The Sufis were not even mentioned. Not only that, both Sunna and Shia have a number of critical sub-branches. This is important, just as many non-christians do not understand the different the different between a UCC member and an evangelical christian living somewhere deep in the bible belt.

-Apparently, Mr. Santorum never read about the crusades.

So, if Mr. Santorum wants to hold an intelligent conversation, he must brush up on his facts first. Otherwise, he hurts his own cause.

But he does have a point: that the war on terror is overwhelmingly a war on radical islam, which, when we are honest with ourselves, is embraced by much much more of the islamic world than we americans want to admit. No, we are not at war with Islam, but the number of muslims who secretly (see: Takiyah) support groups like El Quada or Hisb'allah or Hamas is shockingly higher than we want to imagine. I suppose if the real numbers were to be known, most americans would go in their pants right away. Out of the estimated 1.6 billion muslims on the earth, it would not surprise me if at least 2/3 of them give tacit if not open approval of the elements and figures of radical islam that have so damaged our world in the last 20 years.

I am an Iraq War Veteran and believe that the University of Nebraska would be better served by allowing Chuck Hagel to address that institution rather than Mr. Santorum. Chuck Hagel is far more qualified to speak on foreign policy issues.

Let's not forget, that even Senator McCain had trouble telling the difference between Sunni and Shia during the campaign. As for Mr. Santorum, well, he was a Neo-Conservative puppet who deservedly was voted out of office. What's disappointing is that Nebraskans are listening to him period.

Don't be ashamed to be Christian. Just be ashamed,as Rick Santorum is, to be an idiot. Only he's too stupid to know what an idiot he is.

There may be specific errors on the part of the reporter, and they should be corrected. But do not lose sight of the fact that this man is deliberately misleading people about the war in Iraq. We are not at war with Islam. Millions upon millions of Muslims live in peace around the world. We are at war with terrorists who abuse their religion to gain power.
