RHA discusses budget for upcoming fundraisers, events

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Residence Hall Association spent a chunk of its meeting Sunday night on events aimed at helping others.

The majority of discussion was spent on a spaghetti buffet and karaoke night event that is being put on by the community resident assistants of Courtyards.

The purpose of the event is to raise funds for the American Cancer Society and raise awareness for Relay for Life, which will be March 27.

The Courtyards staff asked RHA for $1,100 to fund the event, which will take place March 24 in the Cather-Pound-Neihardt Dining Hall.

Jeff Lopez, a junior chemical and biomolecular engineering major, said that even though the event was aimed at residents in all halls, most people would not leave their respective dorms to come to the event.

"We shouldn't be funding that much money," he said. "I'd be more comfortable with $300 to $400."

Chris Espinoza, a sophomore mechanical engineering major, said he felt the Courtyards resident assistants should have asked YARD, the Courtyards' residence association, for the money before coming straight to RHA.

Melissa Anderson, a senior actuarial science major, said the reason the resident assistants didn't go to YARD was because YARD had already put on its own fundraisers for the American Cancer Society.

In the end, RHA voted to give the requested funds to the community resident assistants.

"This is the epitome of what RHA as a whole should be funding," said RHA Treasurer Lucas Sevedge, a sophomore philosophy major.

RHA also approved allocating $700 for Love Memorial Hall's semi-formal that will benefit the Friendship Home. The event will be held March 26 at Windsor Stables.

Other actions taken during the RHA meeting include:

• Allocation of $500 to a Major Fair put on by The Academia Initiatives Committee and the Division of General Studies. The event, to take place March 25 at Harper-Schramm-Smith, is aimed at general studies students and those considering switching their major.

• Allocation of $335 for the next Pulse event, which will be March 25 at Selleck Residence Hall.

The next RHA meeting will be on March 21.
