Huskers wrap up fall camp
A 75-minute situational walk through completed the third week of practice for the Nebraska football team Saturday. The Huskers went without pads, just T-shirts and shorts, in preparation for Saturday's season-opener against Western Kentucky.
Coach Bo Pelini said his players are ready to get out on the field and play some real games.
"You get to this point where guys are sick of hitting each other," Pelini said. "They're ready to play some football and see where we are."
Sunday marked the team's third off day since fall camp began Aug. 7.
"It gives our guys a legs break," Pelini said. "It's a good weekend to get your legs back so we can hit the ground running on Monday and get ready for Western Kentucky."
Pelini: ‘We have our plan' at QB
Another practice, and there are still no hints about who Nebraska's starting quarterback will be.
We do know this, though: The race might already be over.
"We have our plan," Pelini said Saturday, "but you'll just have to wait and see what it is."
When asked if he would stick with one guy or perhaps rotate between Zac Lee, Cody Green and
Taylor Martinez throughout the game, Pelini said the quarterback job is no different from any other position.
"We'll play who we need to win the football game," Pelini said. "We could play 10 guys. I don't have a crystal ball. We have our plan, but you just have to wait and see what it is."
Usually around this time of year, NU releases a depth chart that gives fans a good idea of who will get a large chunk of the playing time on Saturdays.
Don't expect to see anything like that coming out anytime soon from the Husker staff. Pelini said he has no plans of releasing a preliminary depth chart at any point this week.
"That's kind of a flowing thing," Pelini said. "I haven't thought much about that, and I don't see any need to do that right now."
High expectations, higher standards
Plenty of Husker fans are excited about NU's No. 8 ranking in the Associated Press poll, their highest preseason ranking in nearly a decade.
But Pelini said he and his team are unconcerned with the high praise, because the outside attention doesn't match what's in the locker room.
"I could care less about the expectations, because my expectations are a lot higher than anybody else out here," Pelini said. "I'm gonna go about my business, and we're going to do our thing as a staff based on our standards, which are really high."
