Huskers wrap up fall camp

A 75-minute situational walk through completed the third week of practice for the Nebraska football team Saturday. The Huskers went without pads, just T-shirts and shorts, in preparation for Saturday's season-opener against Western Kentucky.

Coach Bo Pelini said his players are ready to get out on the field and play some real games.

"You get to this point where guys are sick of hitting each other," Pelini said. "They're ready to play some football and see where we are."

Sunday marked the team's third off day since fall camp began Aug. 7.

"It gives our guys a legs break," Pelini said. "It's a good weekend to get your legs back so we can hit the ground running on Monday and get ready for Western Kentucky."

Pelini: ‘We have our plan' at QB

Another practice, and there are still no hints about who Nebraska's starting quarterback will be.

We do know this, though: The race might already be over.

"We have our plan," Pelini said Saturday, "but you'll just have to wait and see what it is."

When asked if he would stick with one guy or perhaps rotate between Zac Lee, Cody Green and

Taylor Martinez throughout the game, Pelini said the quarterback job is no different from any other position.

"We'll play who we need to win the football game," Pelini said. "We could play 10 guys. I don't have a crystal ball. We have our plan, but you just have to wait and see what it is."

Usually around this time of year, NU releases a depth chart that gives fans a good idea of who will get a large chunk of the playing time on Saturdays.

Don't expect to see anything like that coming out anytime soon from the Husker staff. Pelini said he has no plans of releasing a preliminary depth chart at any point this week.

"That's kind of a flowing thing," Pelini said. "I haven't thought much about that, and I don't see any need to do that right now."

High expectations, higher standards

Plenty of Husker fans are excited about NU's No. 8 ranking in the Associated Press poll, their highest preseason ranking in nearly a decade.

But Pelini said he and his team are unconcerned with the high praise, because the outside attention doesn't match what's in the locker room.

"I could care less about the expectations, because my expectations are a lot higher than anybody else out here," Pelini said. "I'm gonna go about my business, and we're going to do our thing as a staff based on our standards, which are really high."

AesopSun Aug 29 2010 00:09A slave named Androcles once escaped from his master and fledto the forest. As he was wandering about there he came upon aLion lying down moaning and groaning. At first he turned to flee, but finding that the Lion did not pursue him, he turned back andwent up to him. As he came near, the Lion put out his paw, whichwas all swollen and bleeding, and Androcles found that a hugethorn had got into it, and was causing all the pain. He pulledout the thorn and bound up the paw of the Lion, who was soon ableto rise and lick the hand of Androcles like a dog. Then the Liontook Androcles to his cave, and every day used to bring him meatfrom which to live. But shortly afterwards both Androcles and theLion were captured, and the slave was sentenced to be thrown tothe Lion, after the latter had been kept without food for severaldays. The Emperor and all his Court came to see the spectacle, and Androcles was led out into the middle of the arena. Soon theLion was let loose from his den, and rushed bounding and roaringtowards his victim. But as soon as he came near to Androcles herecognised his friend, and fawned upon him, and licked his handslike a friendly dog. The Emperor, surprised at this, summonedAndrocles to him, who told him the whole story. Whereupon theslave was pardoned and freed, and the Lion let loose to his nativeforest. TheChrysalis moved its tail, and thus attracted the attention of the Ant,who then saw for the first time that it was alive. "Poor, pitiableanimal!" cried the Ant disdainfully. "What a sad fate is yours! While I can run hither and thither, at my pleasure, and, if I wish, ascend the tallest tree, you lie imprisoned here in your shell, withpower only to move a joint or two of your scaly tail." The Chrysalisheard all this, but did not try to make any reply. A few days after, when the Ant passed that way again, nothing but the shell remained.Wondering what had become of its contents, he felt himself suddenlyshaded and fanned by the gorgeous wings of a beautiful Butterfly."Behold in me," said the Butterfly, "your much-pitied friend! Boastnow of your powers to run and climb as long as you can get me tolisten." So saying, the Butterfly rose in the air, and, borne alongand aloft on the summer breeze, was soon lost to the sight of theAnt forever. "Appearances are deceptive." The Ant and the Dove AN ANT went to the bank of a river to quench its thirst, andbeing carried away by the rush of the stream, was on the point ofdrowning. A Dove sitting on a tree overhanging the water pluckeda leaf and let it fall into the stream close to her. The Antclimbed onto it and floated in safety to the bank. Shortlyafterwards a birdcatcher came and stood under the tree, and laidhis lime-twigs for the Dove, which sat in the branches. The Ant,perceiving his design, stung him in the foot. In pain thebirdcatcher threw down the twigs, and the noise made the Dovetake wing. The Ant and the Grasshopper In a field one summer's day a Grasshopper was hopping about, chirping and singing to its heart's content. An Ant passed by,bearing along with great toil an ear of corn he was taking to thenest. "Why not come and chat with me," said the Grasshopper,"instead of toiling and moiling in that way?" "I am helping to lay up food for the winter," said the Ant,"and recommend you to do the same." "Why bother about winter?" said the Grasshopper; we have gotplenty of food at present." But the Ant went on its way andcontinued its toil. When the winter came the Grasshopper had nofood and found itself dying of hunger, while it saw the antsdistributing every day corn and grain from the stores they hadcollected in the summer. Then the Grasshopper knew: It is best to prepare for the days of necessity. A Grasshopper, perishing with famine, passedby and earnestly begged for a little food. The Ants inquired ofhim, "Why did you not treasure up food during the summer?' Hereplied, "I had not leisure enough. I passed the days insinging." They then said in derision: "If you were foolish enoughto sing all the summer, you must dance supperless to bed in thewinter."
