The Job Search Survival workshop, hosted by University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Career Services, will be held Tuesday from 3 to 6 p.m. in the Nebraska Union.
This free workshop is aimed at giving students of all academic backgrounds the basic tools necessary to succeed in getting the job of their choice.
The workshop is comprised of three sessions, each covering an important aspect of the job search process. The first two sessions will cover formatting resumes and cover letters and focus on how to effectively use networks of contacts.
The third session will feature an hour-long panel discussion between representatives of Streck Labs, National Research Co., Lincoln Industries and Thrivent Financial. Students can choose to attend one or all of the three sessions.
The workshop comes at a time when the job market is on the rocks, especially for college students.
"Student use of these kinds of programs has definitely increased," said Thomas Allison, assistant director of UNL Career Services. "Though, there doesn't seem to be a definite link between, say, the recession and yearly increases in student involvement.
"In fact, it really fluctuates, mainly due to students having conflicting schedules, the weather, that kind of thing."
This workshop has been in existence under one name or the other for several years and has changed to be more convenient for students and expanded to include the employer panel, said Kelli Smith, assistant director of Career Services.
"If there is one bit of advice I'd like to impart upon students with regard to resumes and cover letters, it would be to tailor their job search documents to fit the specific job being considered," Smith said. "That demonstrates time has been taken to really research the employer's needs, and it highlights the skills most needed in that particular job. It certainly takes more time to do this, but in my experience working with students, mass resume mailings and postings tend to not have nearly as much success."
Whether searching for full-time, part-time or internship positions, the Job Search Survival workshop hopes to provide students with enough information to attain the position they desire.
The workshop is also an opportunity for students to prepare for the Fall Career Fair, held Oct. 6-8, as well as the Spring Career Fair, held Feb. 9-10.
The UNL Office of Career Services also offers walk-in counseling for individual appointments from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day.
