Editor's note: Despite Tuesday morning's ice and snow, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln remained open, so many students who live off-campus spent extra time clearing off their cars and cautiously venturing over icy sidewalks on their way to classes.

"I have a 9:30 class and I left my car heating for a half-hour while I was eating breakfast, and it took another 20 minutes to scrape the rest of the ice off the car," said Phil Jackman, a senior construction management major.

Jackman said he was able to get to class on time, but he had to leave much earlier than usual.

"The main roads aren't that bad, it's when you get into the neighborhoods that there are problems," he said.

Ella Kay, a sophomore dance major, also left her car running for 30 minutes. After the car warmed up, Kay spent time scraping ice.

"My car was parked outside and my entire car was covered in ice - it was like an igloo," she said.

Kay was unable to make it to campus in time for her first class.

The ice on Amy Leaf's car about a quarter of an inch thick, she estimated.

"My scraper broke," she said.

The senior marketing major spent nearly 30 minutes chiseling around the door of her roommate's car to grab another scraper so she could finish with her own car.

Justin Graham, a senior pre-dental sociology major, discovered a better way to get the ice off his car.

"Beating it works better than scraping," he said.

Graham hit the windows of his truck with the scraper, clearing the ice off in 20 minutes.

He almost fell twice when he arrived to campus: once on the stairs behind the Campus Recreation Center and once while crossing a parking lot.

Graham was not happy to have school today.

"We should've been canceled," he said, shaking his head.
