Most girls dream of their wedding day from the time they're in pigtails playing dress up until the day they say "I do." Everything has to be perfect, and a major part of perfection for any bride is finding the ideal wedding dress.

Finding "the" dress can be tricky. Many factors have to be taken into consideration: budget, a style that flatters the bride's body shape, the time of year the wedding is held, location of the ceremony and reception and the bride's personal taste are a few of those factors.

One of the best ways to get started is to look at wedding magazines, said Irina Stoyan, who is getting married in September. This allows the blushing bride to get a good idea of what kind of style she is interested in, she said. Once a few gown styles stand out, it's time to hit the bridal shops.

There are several different types of wedding dress shops around Lincoln, from larger nationwide retail locations to small, independently-owned boutiques.

David's Bridal, a national retail chain located in Lincoln at Gateway Mall, offers a wide selection of dresses in a nice, casual setting. The sales associates are willing to assist customers in gathering dresses or offering opinions. A wall length mirror as well as three-way mirrors can be found outside of the fitting rooms to help the bride get a complete image of the dress.

Another option when shopping for gowns is to peruse the pricier selections, often from well-known designers, at smaller boutiques. Ellynne Bridal, 4400 S. 70th St., is a good example of this type of shop. The slogan for Ellynne's is "where you will always be treated like a princess," and that's no joke. The gown gallery is complete with a white grand piano and plush carpet, and the private dressing rooms are outfitted with a small stage, a full-length mirror, a chandelier and a fluffy embroidered "bride-to-be" robe to wear between fittings. The gowns at Ellynne Bridal are typically a bit pricier, but the experience is worth a visit.

Meghan Payne-Hensley, a recent graduate at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and a newlywed, said she knew exactly what she wanted when she started shopping, but as she tried on some different styles, she found herself to be surprised by a few dresses she would have initially left on the racks.

"Having something in mind is good, but don't only try that one style," Payne-Hensley said. "Don't be close minded."
