Wednesday night, the University Program Council took its case for a $40,000 funding increase to the Association of Students of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and received the requested funding boost.

In doing so, UPC director Karen Wills claimed that a Feb. 9 Daily Nebraskan article contained false information. The article was a response to a Jan. 28 show at the Bourbon Theatre featuring the Seattle-based hip-hop group Blue Scholars. The article states that UPC had a net loss of $7,913.79 on the concert. UPC and the Bourbon Theatre provided all figures from the story.

Noah Ballard, a junior English major and the DN Arts and Entertainment editor, assigned the story.

"I assigned the story based on low attendance reports from the recent show and a general curiosity for how their money is spent due to their recent and just-passed fund increase by CFA," Ballard said.

The article also used quotes from students Hans Larsen, a sophomore marketing major and UPC entertainment chair, and Lauren Jewell, a junior actuarial science major and UPC financial chair.

In video of the ASUN meeting provided to the DN by NUnitedMedia, Wills said that the DN article falsified quotes and that those who were interviewed don't remember saying some quotes.

Wills said she was caught off guard by the way some ASUN senators were phrasing their questions to her about the DN and UPC.

"I owe (the DN) an apology," she said. "I should have let the (UPC) students talk for themselves."

Daily Nebraskan Editor-In-Chief Matthew Buxton, a senior news-editorial major, issued a statement Thursday on the matter.

"I stand behind my reporters," Buxton said. "I believe in their ability to report the facts accurately and fairly, and I hope that our future efforts to cover events live will send the message that we are dedicated to those values."

At the meeting, Wills also said that UPC has a great relationship with the Bourbon Theatre.

"We have a good relationship with UPC," said Jeremy Buckley, event booker for the Bourbon Theatre. "But in the future we will take more steps so that proper planning is in place."

As of now, according to the Bourbon Theatre, there is a $109.35 outstanding balance of rental DJ equipment for the show, which Wills said she has paid.

Wills said her relationship with the Daily Nebraskan is important. The contract for UPC's next show, stand-up comedian Aziz Ansari, states Ansari wants an interview by the campus' newspaper, according to Wills.
