A command hook sticks to the wall in Abel Dining Center on Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2019, in Lincoln, Nebraska.

As a part of our initiative called Curious Cornhuskers, an anonymous reader asked The Daily Nebraskan, “Why are there mysterious command hooks on several walls and pillars within Abel dining hall?”

Marilyn McCalla, dining service manager of Abel Dining Center, had a quick response.

“That’s an easy one,” she said in an email. “We use those for the wreaths that we hang at Christmastime.”

McCalla said the hooks will be utilized more often than just around Christmas, but they did not have any September holidays to decorate for.

“We actually try to decorate for all of the holidays,” she said. “Soon, we will be pulling out the Halloween decorations, and we will also have decorations for Thanksgiving.”

Abel Dining Center also hosts a holiday dinner held sometime during the last few weeks of the fall semester, she said.

McCalla said the dining service staff will also decorate for Valentine’s Day and for the spring season.

“We really try to enhance our student dining experience by having seasonal decorations,” she said.
