Police break up party, issue MIPs, disorderly house
A party with more than 50 underage students was broken up by the Lincoln Police Department just before midnight on Thursday, and five University of Nebraska-Lincoln students were cited.
Police officers were called to the house at 6265 Cascade St. because of loud noise, and as soon as they arrived, LPD Officer Katie Flood said someone yelled "cops," and two females jumped from the back deck and ran through the yard that was littered with beer cans and bottles.
When police knocked on the door, Shaina Bergt, a UNL sophomore psychology major, answered with a clear plastic cup of beer in each hand and was ticketed for being a minor in possession of alcohol.
Inside, Flood said police saw "no less than 50 people, all under 21, in varying states of intoxication" and smelled burnt marijuana. The party was dispersed, and Alexandria Powell, a freshman general studies major at UNL, was ticketed for MIP and taken to the hospital because she was too inebriated to leave on her own.
The residents, Tyler Webster, a UNL sophomore business major; Patrick Schuh, a junior actuarial science major at UNL; and Garrett Rehkamp, a UNL sophomore business administration major, were ticketed for maintaining a disorderly house.
Student cited for marijuana and drug paraphernalia possession
A University of Nebraska-Lincoln student was ticketed for marijuana and drug paraphernalia possession early Sunday morning.
Carl Oestmann, director of patrol operations for UNL police, said an officer responded to a report from a Community Security Officer saying there were narcotics being used in a car on campus. At 3:30 a.m., the officer found the suspected car parked near the police station at 17th and R streets.
Oestmann said the officer could smell burnt marijuana when he questioned the two people, and the investigation produced a small amount of marijuana and a pipe used to smoke it. One of the people in the car, Jarod Petersen, a UNL freshman electrical engineering major, admitted to having illicit materials, and was cited and released.
Man stabbed at birthday party
A stabbing outside a Mexican restaurant at 2 a.m. Sunday left a 23-year-old man in the hospital with a collapsed lung.
Officer Katie Flood of the Lincoln Police Department said the stabbing is believed to be gang related.
The victim reported that he went to the Lucy's Mexican Restaurant at 5800 Cornhusker Highway for a birthday party, and when he was there, he was approached outside the restaurant by a 24-year-old man whom he had previous altercations with. The victim was surrounded by four men, and the man he identified stabbed him in the chest and the back of the head.
Flood said police were trying to contact the suspect Monday morning.
