Tires and rims stolen in HSS parking lot

On March 8, just after midnight, University of Nebraska-Lincoln Police received a notification that the tires and rims from a vehicle in the Harper-Schramm-Smith Residence Hall parking lot had been stolen.

Upon arrival, UNL police found a vehicle on cinder blocks in the parking lot.

“The total loss was around $1,100,” said Carl Oestmann, director of patrol operations for UNLPD.

The victim claimed to be sure the theft occurred sometime between 8:15 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.

Oestmann stressed the importance of reporting such crimes to the police.

“We just want to make sure that everyone living here on campus looks out for each other.

We just need everyone to keep an eye out for crime and report it to us so that we can do our job effectively,” he said.

He also requested that students be specifically on the lookout for this tire thief.

Investigation leads to fireworks violation citation

Around 11:30 p.m. on March 1, a witness contacted the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Police complaining of a fireworks violation.

Officers arrived on the scene in front of the Wick Alumni Center and found several used fireworks and a small cloud of smoke.

“Through a little investigation, the officers were able to discover the troublemaker on this one,” said Carl Oestmann, director of patrol operations for UNLPD.

Chad Brown, a sophomore general studies major at UNL, was cited for a fireworks violation when he admitted to using firecrackers in the area, Oestmann said.

Police also confiscated the remainder of Brown’s fireworks supply.

Drunk trespasser found in Love Library

A University of Nebraska-Lincoln Police officer on patrol March 4 escorted an intoxicated man off campus.

At 10:26 a.m., the officer, who “was patrolling UNL campus on foot, encountered a man in Love Library South who exhibited signs of having consumed alcohol,” said Carl Oestmann, director of patrol operations for UNLPD.

David Rowland, a 53-year-old non-student and Lincoln resident, was cited for trespassing and taken to detox after registering a .271 BAC.

Wrong turn on one-way street leads to alcohol citation

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Police performed a routine traffic stop on March 6 at 1:08 a.m., pulling Joseph Richardson over on Q Street between 17th and 18th streets, for driving the wrong way on a one-way street.

UNL Police “noticed that Richardson also exhibited signs of intoxication and observed several open containers of alcohol inside the car,” said Carl Oestmann, director of patrol operations for UNLPD. Richardson, who is a 25-year-old non-student from Kearney, was cited for driving under the influence of alcohol, having an open container of alcohol in the car and for driving the wrong direction down a one-way street, Oestmann said.

Traffic violation uncovers alcohol in car

At 10:44 p.m. on March 5, University of Nebraska-Lincoln Police stopped a car containing four people for a making an improper turn north onto R Street from 17th Street.

Upon approaching the vehicle, the officer “saw alcohol inside, several were open,” said Carl Oestmann, director of patrol operations for UNLPD.

Jennifer Pickering, a sophomore food science and technology major, was the only UNL student in the car and was cited for being a minor in possession of alcohol and having an open container of alcohol.

The other three occupants, non-students between the ages of 22 and 25, were similarly cited, with one also being charged with procuring alcohol for minors and driving under the influence of alcohol.
