Refusal to leave the Union leads to arrest
On Friday, Feb. 5, at 7:52 p.m., an employee at the Nebraska Union contacted the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Police because of a trespasser. "Police were dispatched to the disturbance," said Carl Oestmann, director of patrol operations for UNLPD, "because the employee claimed that a man had refused to leave the union at closing time and seemed intoxicated."
Officers contacted Jose Rojas, a 42-year-old non-student, who refused to leave the union after open hours and had a BAC of .324. They took him into custody and delivered him to the Lancaster County jail to be processed.
Serial litterer cited again
On Sunday, Feb. 7, at 11:23 p.m., at the Kabredlo's Convenience Store at 1540 P St., witnesses saw a man taking garbage bags from a nearby dumpster and "dumping the trash all over the area in front of the store and in the middle of P Street," said Carl Oestmann, director of patrol operations for UNLPD. Police responded to the tip and searched the surrounding area for the man in question.
He was later identified in an alley near the store, "smelling strongly of alcohol," Oestmann said.
Richard Campbell, who recorded a .176 BAC, was positively identified and cited for disturbing the peace and littering. He was also identified in connection with a similar incident at a different convenience store, where he had been found to be intoxicated, dumping trash in the street and had been cited for the same two crimes.
Pairs of freshmen found with marijuana in parking lots
On Feb. 6 and 7, two separate pairs of students were discovered to be in possession of less than one ounce of marijuana and of drug paraphernalia while parked in their respective cars in parking lots. Both incidents took place when UNL Police responded to complaints of possible narcotics, one in the Harper-Schramm-Smith parking lot and the other in a parking lot at 515 N 19th St.
In the first case, Sean Higgins and Bret Zingula, both freshmen business administration majors, were cited for Minor in Possession of Alcohol as well as possession of less than one ounce of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
Of the other two UNL students, only one, Matthew Robertson, a freshman general studies major, was charged with Possession of Marijuana, when "the officer saw a still-burning marijuana cigarette in plain view in the vehicle," said Carl Oestmann, director of patrol operations for UNLPD.
