Police search Sigma Chi fraternity house

The University of Nebraska Police Department served a search warrant at the Sigma Chi fraternity house March 18 at 11:40 a.m. to investigate allegations of hazing.

"Obviously police will conduct a thorough investigation," said Kelly Bartling, manager of news for University Communications, who read known details from a prepared statement.

It remains unclear from where these allegations stemmed and the extent of the alleged crime.

Bartling said it is too soon in the investigation to provide any details, but did say the university plans to investigate the matter separate from UNLPD.

"Hazing is a very serious matter," she said.

She said everyone involved has been cooperating in an effort "to get to the bottom of what has happened."

Freshman found passed out in lobby

While making rounds inside Schramm Residence Hall near 4 a.m. Monday, a community service officer came upon Joshua Raburn, freshman general studies student and Sandoz resident, passed out in an upper-floor lobby. Upon talking with Raburn, it was determined he had been drinking earlier in the evening. After testing a .158 BAC, he was cited with MIP and trespassing, police said.

Senior cited with DWI after running red light

Minutes before 2 a.m. Saturday, a UNL police officer noticed Justin Hyde, a senior construction engineering major, was having difficulty walking from Q to R streets. The officer observed Hyde get into a vehicle, where he proceeded down 14th Street back toward Q. He then ran the light at the 14th and Q intersection and made a turn without signalling. After pulling Hyde over, the officer determined the student had been drinking. Hyde was cited for DWI, violating a traffic control device and failing to signal a turn. He tested a .107 BAC, police said.

University vehicles suffer damage over weekend

On Saturday, March 14, UNLPD received reports of two university vans with the windows damaged and broken. One, parked in the lot north of the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery, had four windows broken by what police have determined to be bricks thrown through the windows.

The other, parked near the Manter Life Sciences building, also had four windows broken by a rock thrown through them.

The damage to the vans is estimated at $3,000.

UNLPD encourages anyone witnessing suspicious activity to call at 472-2222, said Asst. Chief Carl Oestmann.
