Hello! The beginning of a new school year is always exciting, and this year is no exception. It’s great to finally see students on campus once again! Welcome back to many of you, and welcome for the first time to our new and transfer students.
As an introduction, the Association of Students of the University of Nebraska (ASUN) is your student government and here to work for you. For those of you who remember last semester, the CONNECT party ran a successful campaign where we pledged to work each day to better the student experience. We vowed to improve sustainability on campus, promote traditions and support more on campus nightlife opportunities for students. We’re working on these projects and adding new ones each day — but please, ask us questions and keep us accountable to you.
As an update, this summer ASUN was a busy place. Amanda Crook, Brian Coburn and I, along with many ASUN senators, committee members and the ASUN staff, worked on a number of projects. These projects included things like improving 475-RIDE, looking at how we can be a more sustainable campus, starting the Peer Financial Education Center (set to open later this fall), as well as how to better communicate with all of you.
Personally, I had the privilege of serving on a number of committees as your student representative this summer. With everything from University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s new Innovation Campus Steering Committee to the Academic Planning Committee’s review of Chancellor Harvey Perlman’s budget reduction recommendations, I did my best to represent students and your varied interests.
ASUN has a number of open positions and is always looking for fresh faces, ideas and perspectives. If you are interested in getting involved and working with us to improve UNL for all students, please stop by our office in the City Campus Union to pick up an application or two (Room 136 in the southwest corner). Also, if there’s ever anything ASUN can do for you, please don’t hesitate to let us know how we can help. Truly, we exist to support students. If we aren’t doing this, then we aren’t doing our job.
I look forward to a wonderful fall semester and to meeting many of you. Good luck with classes and Go Big Red!
Sincerely,
Megan Collins
