A new chapter of online access has been opened at the University of Nebraska?Lincoln.
Recently iTunes U, an application of iTunes that allows colleges and universities to share audio and video files, added the University of Nebraska to its growing list of schools using the program.
NU is the 38th school to use iTunes U. Other schools include MIT, Stanford and Yale.
The university will feature podcasts such as the E.N. Thompson Forum on Global Issues lectures, the Chelsea Clinton and Michelle Obama visits and the Real Nebraska admissions videos.
Once downloaded, these podcasts can be heard or viewed on any iPod or iPhone.
The Department of Communications' Internet and Interactive Media team - the same staff members who manage UNL's Web site - has worked on this project for three months now, said Meg Lauerman, UNL's communications director.
"We want to be early adopters," Lauerman said. "It is always important to keep our eyes open to new media and technologies."
Professors also will be able to make their lectures available for students via iPods, Lauerman said.
"Some schools are already offering non-credit classes via iTunes," Lauerman said. "I think this will be a great way for people to see what courses are like here at Nebraska."
Between Feb. 24 and March 2, the site shared more than 3,000 downloads from more than 4,500 browsers, said Kelly Bartling, UNL's news manager.
The most popular downloads were the Clinton and Obama visits with around 300 each, partly because they were featured on the iTunes front page, she said.
People can access iTunes U via a link in the online iTunes store.
"I have a good feeling that this will expand," Lauerman said. "It's a great way for anyone in the world to see what we have to offer."
