Maria Scaffidi is a sophomore all-around gymnast from Hartland, Wis. Scaffidi won her first individual collegiate title against Iowa State earlier this season. She scored a career-high 39.00 in the all-around for the win on Jan. 11. At the same meet, Scaffidi finished second on beam with a career-high score of 9.85.

What's your favorite event and why?

Balance beam because it is challenging and I really like training it.

What's your least favorite event and why?

Floor. I like competing in it, but I've struggled a little with the tumbling this year. But it's getting better.

What is the best part about home meets?

That the crowd gets into it, and more parents come.

It seems that everyone on the team has a nickname. What is yours?

'Mar.' It's just a shorter version of my name.

Do you have any pre-meet rituals or superstitions?

I always have to have my hair done really early, like the day before the meet.

What was the most memorable meet you have competed in?

The Junior Pan American Games in Brazil. I was competing for the U.S., and I got to experience a different country and culture. The U.S. won the meet, and I won the all-around.
