UNL ranked most popular public university in U.S.

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln has been named the most popular public institution in the United States by U.S. News & World Report magazine.

The magazine based its ranking on each school's yield rate, which is the percentage of applicants accepted by a school that end up enrolling at that institution in the fall.

A high yield rate means the institution "is most likely very popular with a top reputation and the students are highly motivated to go there," according to U.S. News. On the flip side, schools with a low yield rate indicates the institution could be a student's second choice, or "safety" school.

Overall, the university ranked sixth on the magazine's list of the 100 most popular national universities with a 66 percent yield rate.

"Someone told me it was good to be popular," wrote Chancellor Harvey Perlman in an e-mail sent to faculty and staff Wednesday morning. "Seems right to me."

UNL Spokeswoman Kelly Bartling said the university has always been proud of its high yield rate, and that yield rate was a new and fresh category for U.S. News to look at.

"Anytime UNL can stand out and show the nation and the world how popular we are and the amazing things we got going on, of course it's going to be exciting," Bartling said.

Brigham Young University in Utah was ranked as the most popular institution, followed by Harvard, Princeton, Stanford and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Besides UNL, there are eight public universities that ranked in the top 20 on the list.

"Hey, we'll take it!" Perlman wrote in his e-mail.
