The Nebraska swimming and diving team concluded its regular season Saturday with a 173-122 loss to nationally-ranked Missouri.
It wasn't the ending the Cornhuskers were looking for, but NU assistant Coach Doug Humphrey said he was pleased with the efforts the team put forth.
Humphrey said that because of illness, the Huskers had to go into the meet without a few of their key swimmers.
"The sickness bug hit us pretty hard," Humphrey said. "We had to leave a few girls back but, despite that, we did pretty well."
NU senior Adrienne Goodman and freshman Meredith Matthies were left behind because of illness. NU sophomore Kelsey Ida also did not participate because of a shoulder injury.
Humphrey said everybody else on the team had to step up to fill the void.
"Everybody on this team plays an important role," Humphrey said. "When you're not at full strength, it makes it really difficult. The other girls did outstanding."
NU freshman Kelsey Grushecky was the bright spot of the day for the Huskers, winning the 100-yard and 200-yard butterfly events.
The two wins gave Grushecky nine on the season moving her into a tie with fellow freshman Julie Giehl for most wins on the team. Grushecky has won at least one event in every dual meet this season, except for NU's loss at Kansas on Jan. 19.
Humphrey said Grushecky's performance was a pleasant surprise because of the demanding training regiment the team has been on.
"She had a fantastic meet," Humphrey said. "We're not in position to see such great swims this time of year, but she did great. It will really boost her confidence going into the conference meet."
Grushecky said she was surprised she was able to do that well because she was also starting to come down with a cold.
"I was definitely surprised when I finished the 200 (butterfly) because that time was a lifetime best for me," Grushecky said. "I did not expect to do that well, and that really got me stoked to do well in the 100 fly."
