As protests and demonstrations continue across the country following the death of George Floyd, a Minneapolis man who died after being detained by Minneapolis police, thousands of protesters met outside the Nebraska State Capitol to hold a peaceful Black Lives Matter protest. Participants of the protest listened to organizers, ministers and community members on the steps of the Capitol and marched around the Capitol grounds. Organizers of the event worked with the Lincoln Police Department and the mayor's office to set up the protest, which lasted from 4-5:30 p.m. After Lincoln Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird issued an emergency declaration and an 8 p.m. curfew, organizers of the event pleaded for attendants to go home at the event’s end, saying those who remained would no longer be associated with the protest.
