The hardest part has been convincing people he would like to be called by his name.

Osama Aljohani, a senior electrical engineering major, is studying at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln on a scholarship from his home country of Saudi Arabia. Aljohani came to UNL in 2006 and said it took about two years for him to feel comfortable as a practicing Muslim on campus.

"In the beginning, it was hard since my name was Osama," Aljohani said. "I lived on campus for two years and people made jokes, but I didn't really know English or have many friends."

Aljohani said every year he has had professors and acquaintances ask if they should call him by his first name. He said he will often get strange looks the first couple of days in class.

"They just need time to adjust," Aljohani said.

But things are much better now than they were. Aljohani has made friends and adjusted to life as a Muslim on campus, partly thanks to the Muslim Student Association (MSA), of which he is now president.

The other officers of the organization agreed that MSA both helped them make friends as well as spread awareness about the Islamic religion.

Symone Kayyem, secretary of MSA and a junior international business major, said she has encountered stereotypes and misconceptions about Muslims among UNL students.

"I met someone on campus who said to me, ‘You're way too pretty to be Muslim,'" Kayyem said. "And I thought, ‘Oh, I didn't know Islam had a face.'"

Kayyem said many students are often "shocked" to find out she is Muslim because she doesn't wear the scarf covering many Islamic women wear. Whether a woman chooses to cover has to do with her own personal faith journey, Kayyem said.

"Once I've reached a certain point in my religion, once you're ready to do that, that's when you're ready and that's when you cover up," Kayyem said.

Aljohani, whose family came with him to Nebraska, said his wife experiences similar misunderstandings.

"People will ask her, ‘Does your husband make you wear that?'" he said. "They don't understand that it's her choice."

Kayyem said many women in Western culture see covering up as being oppressive but Kayyem said the effect is actually very liberating.

"It gives them more respect; it empowers them," Kayyem said, "(A woman who covers) is not defined by what she wears, how long her hair is, or how much makeup she wears."

Junior international studies major Patrick Barney is a convert from Christianity. He said he's dealt with misunderstandings among his peers and family members who, despite living in the Middle East for eight years, still don't know much about Islam.

"My dad is a Christian conservative, and a big fan of Bill O'Reilly, Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh … He told me I was going to hell, and he threatened to kick me out," Barney said. He said his mom and sister were afraid he would try and convert them.

The students said practicing the Islamic faith as a college student can bring challenges, like fitting in five prayer times a day or observing the Islamic dietary restrictions.

Aljohani said finding a place to pray, as well as scheduling the prayer, can be difficult.

"It's kind of hard to go outside to pray," he said. "Some people might make fun. But some are comfortable praying wherever."

If classes interfere with prayer times, Aljohani said, Muslim students must pray right after class.

As far as the dietary restrictions, Kayyem said Muslims must eat meat that has been prepared and blessed in a special way, similar to Kosher food. However, for Muslims who are visiting other countries, it is okay for them to eat meat prepared by Christians or Jews, who are considered "People of the Book."

Pork and alcohol, however, are still forbidden.

"Honestly, pork is sort of fatty," Kayyem said. "I don't want to eat it, even if it's allowed. If it wouldn't be for my religion, it would be a personal choice."

The MSA officers agree the group has given them a home on campus and a way to grow in their faith.

"The religion is so vast and there's so much to know, it's nice to be in this group and have people you can ask questions," Kayyem said. "There's always someone you can relate to."

With about 30 active members, MSA has several activities a month including halaqa studies, which Kayyem explains are kind of like "Muslim Bible studies." There are also events celebrating Islamic holidays or simple get-togethers. Students of all faith backgrounds are invited to these events.

Kayyem said she hopes people who are curious about the Islamic faith come to events or ask questions to learn more and to dispel some of the stereotypes.

"Just don't be shy," Kayyem said. "Come up to us. We really don't bite. This is why MSA is here."

Students wanting to learn more can visit the MSA office in room 348 of the Jackie Gaughan Multicultural Center or visit MSA's website at www.unl.edu/msa/home.

I often hear Muslims say: sure we had Jihads but you Christians had Crusades. Consider this Jesus never hurt a fly while Mohammad, in the name of God killed and enslaved countless souls, devised rules for dividing plunder and captives and advised men on how to beat their wives. Many misguided Christians waged war in the name of God but when Muslims wage war it is in accordance with the Quran and in the name of Allah. Jesus said "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God"
Mohammad said: "So when you confront the disbelievers, strike at their necks; until when you have slain them in plenty, tie them up firmly; then after that, you may either release them as a favour or take ransom, until the war lays down its ordeal; this is it; and had Allah willed He Himself could have taken revenge from them, but this is to test some of you with others; and Allah will surely never waste the deeds of those who were killed in His way."

Dear "PLEASE READ HISTORY AGAIN .. then start talking about it!" Yes Jesus did die on a cross and he rose from the dead. Mohammad, on the other hand, is still dead; like all false prophets.
The name Jesus is a transliteration of the Hebrew "Joshua" (which is why you find Him occasionally referred to as Yeshua by people of Jewish background who have become Christians).
The Hebrew word Joshua means 'Jehovah is salvation', hence the meaning of Jesus name savior.
Matthew 1:21 (King James Version)
21And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.
The meaning of His name is also clear from the purpose for which He came,
the purpose of which He was Himself aware and which He carried out on the cross of Calvary and sealed with the glorious resurrection.
Yeshua or Joshua means "Jehovah is Salvation" in Hebrew. The Greeks pronounced Joshua as Jesus. This is what Jesus was known as, since Greek was the common language of his day.
Remember this Jesus promised forgiveness love peace and life.

We have another name for Jesus: Savior.

Mohammed is the same as Jesus? Yeah right.

It is probably fair to say that Muhammad did not approve of the intentional killing of children. A verse from the Qur'an laments the pre-Islamic Arab practice of infanticide against baby girls. Other evidence from the Hadith suggests that he instructed his men not to kill children in battle, if it could be avoided, but to capture them for slavery.

Children were often given a specific reprieve from the mandate to "kill those who disbelieve in Allah":

[Muhammad said] "Fight everyone in the way of Allah and kill those who disbelieve in Allah. Do not be deceitful with the spoils; do not be treacherous, nor mutilate nor kill children." (Ibn Ishaq/Hisham 992)
But Muhammad's definition of a child was not the same as our modern understanding. Following the surrender of the Qurayza stronghold, he ordered the execution of every male child who had reached puberty. His men had the boys drop their pants so that they could chop the head off of anyone with pubic hair (Sahih Muslim 4390).

Keep in mind that many Muslims often insist that Aisha reached puberty at age nine, since that is the age that Muhammad began having sex with her. If so, then the age for "manhood" among boys might have been considered around twelve.

Muhammad also played a bit loose with the lives of women and children during wartime. As recorded in both Bukhari and Sahih Muslim:

It is reported on the authority of Sa'b b. Jaththama that the Prophet of Allah (may peace be upon him), when asked about the women and children of the polytheists being killed during the night raid, said: "They are from them." (Sahih Muslim 4322, see also Bukhari 52:256)
This does not justify the targeted killing of women and children per se, but it does prove that collateral damage is entirely acceptable if it accomplishes the military goal of spreading Islamic rule. It is doubtful that Muhammad would ever shrug off the killing of young Muslims as he did the killing of non-Muslim children.

Muhammad did, in fact, draw a distinction between Muslim and non-Muslim children and said that it would be permissible to kill a child who has no prospect of accepting Islam:

The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) used not to kill the children, so thou shouldst not kill them unless you could know what Khadir had known about the child he killed, or you could distinguish between a child who would grow up to he a believer (and a child who would grow up to be a non-believer), so that you killed the (prospective) non-believer and left the (prospective) believer aside. (Sahih Muslim 4457)
After capturing Mecca, the prophet of Islam also ordered the execution of two "singing girls" who had mocked him in verse:

"...two singing-girls Fartana and her friend who used to sing satirical songs about the apostle, so he ordered that they should be killed..." (Ibn Ishaq/Hisham 819)

Dear commenter,

please read about Jesus and about Mohammed ..
you will find them the same!
I did and I was surprised

beside Jesus did not die .. he is God how can he die?
don't you believe that he is going to return back again!

.. I think you do not know about any religion!
sorry to say that, but it is obvious from your wrong info about Jesus ..

First of all his name is not starting with the "J" .. his name is an old hebrew name that either started with "E" or "Y"!

Second ..The one who you are referring to did not die on cross!! It was some torture wooden Column with his both hands up..

PLEASE READ HISTORY AGAIN .. then start talking about it!

On cue here come the character assassinations.

Comparing Islam to Christianity is like comparing apples and moon rocks.

Jesus turned the other cheek.
Mohammed cut off the head.

Jesus loved his neighbor.
Mohammed conquered his.

Jesus died for our sins.
Mohammed killed, raped, robbed and enslaved.

Jesus died on the cross.
Mohammed died from obesity.

Dear all,
I wanted to read more about any religion I can easily find the bad examples in all of them!
you want to read about raping women you can find it in these days wars! ,, and it will be Muslim women who got raped .. If you want bad example of some Jewish or Some Christians you will find.

The point here is to balance our emotions .. and to read what is there .. not what we want

and for that respected Anonymous dear .. who wrote about part of what happened in Islam .. I am sure you did not read the whole story! and that Judgment is eventually came from one who the Jewish people, of that time and place, themselves choose to do whatever they deserve in that mans vision!

I can go here and there .. argue a lot .. but again
we need to be balanced in our judgment .. :)

I am sure you all will understand

-Abdullah

Oh no, an anonymous poster has produced quotes and links to anti-islam websites! Oh no! That is conclusive evidence.

I have decide to change my ways and convert to Limbaughism from this day forth! Let ignorance reign supreme!

This really makes me wonder if you are just an anti-islam troll or scared of the powerful message of islam. Without provocation you post these items and they lack proper sourcing, only a decpetive message.

I urge anyone else who reads this fool's posts not to respond. I've only done so out of pity.

Here are just a few examples of religious Muslims calling out for the conquest of the world. These are NOT my words they are straight from the horse's mouth.

• The former Turkish Prime Minister Erbakan said - I quote: "The whole of Europe will become Islamic. We will conquer Rome".
• Yunis al-Astal, a Hamas cleric and member of the Palestinian Parliament said - I quote: "Very soon Rome will be conquered."
• Ali Al-Faqir, the former Jordanian Minister of Religion, stated that - I quote: "Islam will conquer Rome."
• Sheikh Muhammad al-Arifi, imam of the mosque of the Saudi Defence Academy, said - I quote: "We will control Rome and introduce Islam in it."
Our opponents are hoping for an event that is akin to the freezing of the Rhine in 406, when thousands of immigrants will be given an easy opportunity to cross massively into the West.
• In a 1974 speech to the UN, the Algerian President Houari Boumédienne, said - I quote: "One day, millions of men will leave the Southern Hemisphere to go to the Northern Hemisphere. And they will not go there as friends. Because they will go there to conquer it. And they will conquer it with their sons. The wombs of our women will give us victory." End of quote.
• Libyan dictator Kadhafi said, I quote: "There are tens of millions of Muslims in the European continent today and their number is on the increase. This is the clear indication that the European continent will be converted into Islam. Europe will one day soon be a Muslim continent." End of quote.
"We reject the U.N., reject America, reject all law and order. Don't lobby Congress or protest because we don't recognize Congress. The only relationship you should have with America is to topple it. . . . Eventually there will be a Muslim in the White House dictating the laws of Shariah." -- Muhammad Faheed, Muslim Students Association meeting, Queensborough Community College, 2003
"Islam isn't in America to be equal to any other faith, but to become dominant. The Koran should be the highest authority in America, and Islam the only accepted religion on earth." -- CAIR cofounder and longtime Board chairman Omar Ahmad, 1998 (denial noted and full story explained at link)
"I wouldn't want to create the impression that I wouldn't like the government of the United States to be Islamic sometime in the future." -- CAIR spokesman Ibrahim Hooper, 1993
"If only Muslims were clever politically, they could take over the United States and replace its constitutional government with a caliphate." -- prominent American Muslim leader Siraj Wahhaj, 2002

I have read about Islam. A lot about Islam.

These are just a few of the things I have learned through studying Islam.

* Mohammed and his men raped women, enslaved children and beheaded all the Jewish men in Qurayza (600+ men).

*Islam is a supremacist cult similar to Nazism in its quest for world domination. We can see this in action in places like Sudan where millions have been nurdered, displaced, gang-raped. Or in places like Nigeria where in the last year thousands of Christians have been murdered. Or in places like southern Thailand where peace-loving Buddhists have been killed by the hundred in the past couple of years. All these atrocities have been done by devout Muslims - at the encouragment of their religious leaders - and in accordance with the Qur'an

Its better to do some reading about the religion itself before judging it :)

Once you read about it "from Muslims" you will find it acceptable and you will understand more about all those terms that confuse you.

You may watch "My Name Is Khan" a good movie that shows part of the reality

My name is Abdullah, I am a Muslim and "I am NOT a terrorest."
