Five worst fashion trends

This list is a countdown of the top five worst looks. I'm not even calling them trends because I don't believe some of these looks were ever in style to start with.

5. Shorts

I know, I know, shorts were everywhere this season. Chanel and Prada displayed shorts with a one-inch inseam with all their summer looks, and hip celebrities are spotted wearing them with their huge sunglasses. But I'm sorry; I think maybe 1 percent of the population can get away with shorts like that. For the majority of women, shorts pull, rub and ride all the wrong way. They should only be worn for exercise and athletic purposes. Since summer is a hot time of year, I condone wearing Bermuda shorts that almost reach the knee, "capants," or short capris, and, of course, skirts. All of these options keep the wearer cool and comfortable.

4. Jean skirts with leggings

Ladies, just stop the insanity. Jean skirts rarely work in cold weather because of the material, texture and style. They don't look right with tights; therefore they don't look right with leggings. Leggings are downtown chic and edgy, while a jean skirt is more casual and beachy. Whatever the differences they may have, jean skirts and leggings should never be worn together. Leggings need something with a bit of flounce or movement to garner the "slimming" effect. When worn with a jean skirt, the effect is very encasing.

3. Tennis shoes with capris or shorts

To clarify, workout tennis shoes are very different than funky tennis shoes. Actual tennis shoes have a clumsy feel that don't pair well with a shortened hemline. Stick to sandals or slip-ons when wearing capris. Think of a shoe that extends and elongates your leg. If you have shorter legs like me, wearing something with a little height, be it wedges or heels, also bumps up the cool factor of capris. If you really need to wear shorts and tennis shoes, you should probably just strap on a fanny pack and plastic visor to fit in with the rest of the tourists.

2. Double denim/the Canadian tuxedo

Call it what you may, this is almost never OK. I'll admit, some men can pull this off if both pieces are a dirty wash and worn-in. Ladies, however, have a much harder time not looking like an 1980s mom. Now that spring has arrived, I've been spotting more and more double denim every day. If you must wear a jean jacket, please wear pants in a different fabric or color. The only thing worse than regular double denim is double denim with a cropped jean jacket.

1. Ugg boots

I know all the excuses - they're warm, they're comfortable, I saw Jessica Simpson in a pair. Whatever the excuse, Ugg boots are no longer in style, and they haven't been for two years. In the midst of a winter snowstorm, feel free to wear them with a snowsuit. But after the first thaw, please put them in the back of your closet where the other shoes can't see them. My favorite Ugg-spotting was a young lady wearing a white cotton skirt - lest she get cold, she had on her sturdy, furry Ugg boots. Believe me, unless you want to be caught on a fashion don'ts page, retire the Uggs.
