Getting old to stay young at Lincoln Calling

Getting old takes perseverance. It’s a constant battle against the aged, those with all the privileges, those who know staying young isn’t a concern until youth is all but gone. They tell us to wait until we’re old enough: And what’s the reward for finally breaking the finish-line tape of 21 years of age? A realization that we pissed away the best years of our lives waiting to reach the end. Lincoln Calling reminded me once again of how we get old to stay young. My (marginal) clout as Daily Nebraskan reporter persuaded nary an incredulous bouncer to let me into the numerous 21-plus shows Friday night. For all the concerts I wanted to see, I caught only Brad Hoshaw and the Seven Deadlies, a pleasant but far from memorable performance by an uninterested performer. Eli Mardock, lead singer of the Lincoln band Eagle Seagull walked off stage during the opening show of Lincoln Calling at the Bourbon Theatre. Mardock told the audience that the band had just got back from Hamburg, Germany and that he was “really jet-lagged.” The band played two songs before Mardock left the stage. The remaining band members then played a mostly instrumental version of their song “20,000 Light Years,” before Mardock returned to the stage, telling the audience he had to take a phone call. The band then played a slurred rendition of “You Can't Call Yourself A Secret” before Mardock said, “That’s the last one” and left the stage again. “He’s probably drunk,” said the band’s lead guitarist Austin...
