Miss Nebraska, 23-year-old Sarah Summers, was crowned Miss USA Monday night and will represent the United States in the Miss Universe competition in November.
A Papillion native, Summers attended Papillion-La Vista High School and graduated in 2013. She left Nebraska after high school to attend Texas Christian University.
Monday’s competition took place in Shreveport, Louisiana, and first narrowed the 51-contestant field to 15, based on their performance in rounds that took place in the days prior. The semifinalists then faced off in the swimsuit competition, which dropped the field to 10 contestants, who were each announced wearing an evening gown.
After that number was halved, a round of question-and-answer followed, leaving the final three members: Summers, Miss Nevada Carolina Urrea and Miss North Carolina, Caelynn Miller-Keyes.
The three were asked what they would write on a sign to bring to a rally — Summers responded with “Speak your voice.”
Summers receives the crown following Kára McCullough of the District of Columbia and will serve as a spokesperson for the Miss Universe Organization.
