This fall, The Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center will feature an appealing variety of movies, including animated shorts, foreign films and a few sure to take viewers on a wildly imaginative ride:
The Wackness
Now-Aug. 28
Set New York City during the 1990s, "The Wackness" follows Luke Shapiro, a drug-dealing teen who trades weed for therapy sessions with Dr. Squires, an eccentric psychiatrist. Luke begins to fall in love with a classmate, who happens to be Squires' daughter. Jonathan Levine directed the film and Ben Kingsley and Mary-Kate Olsen make appearances.
The Fall
Now-Aug. 28
In 1920s Los Angeles, a young immigrant girl finds herself in a hospital after a fall. There, she meets a bedridden stuntman who tells her an exotic tale to make her time at the hospital more bearable and exciting. To keep the girl interested, the man uses her family and friends as central characters in his story. Shot on location in 28 countries, "The Fall" mirrors the extravagance of the man's tale.
Encounters at the End of the World
Aug. 29-Sept. 11
For this documentary, Werner Herzog travels to the Antarctic community of McMurdo Station, the headquarters of the National Science Foundation. During the austral summer, 1,100 people, including marine biologists and physicists make this community their home. Herzog juxtaposes the beauty of the Antarctic environment with the realities of human nature.
The Animation Show Year Four
Aug. 29-Sept. 11
This piece includes more than 24 animated shorts. The film defies a common misconception that animated movies are only for children. Many of the shorts explore adult subject matter.
The Last Mistress
Sept. 12-Sept. 25
The film explores the often overlooked dark side of 19th century French high society. Ryno de Marigny is soon to marry the love of his life, Hermangarde. Based on his strong feelings for her, Ryno decides to end his love affair with the tempestuous Vellini, played by Asia Argento. This feat, in the end, proves too great for Ryno.
Frozen River
Sept. 12-Sept. 25
After her husband leaves her and gambles away the family's savings, Ray Eddy is forced to find a way to support herself and her sons. During a search for her husband, Ray meets Lila Littlewolf, a woman faced with a similar struggle to make ends meet. The two team up to smuggle illegal immigrants into the country for money. The piece is deeply emotional and reveals the desperation of a single mother.
Tell No One
Sept. 26-Oct. 9
This French thriller follows Dr. Alex Beck, who receives an e-mail containing a presumably real-time video of his wife despite her death eight years prior. Beck embarks on a quest to learn the truth behind his wife's supposed death.
In Search of a Midnight Kiss
Oct. 10-Oct. 16
Shot in black and white, the romantic comedy follows Wilson, who, upon realizing he will have no one to kiss at midnight on New Year's Eve, places an ad on craigslist, a networking site that features classifieds. Through the ad, Wilson finds Vivian, who turns out to be the blind-date from hell. The two begin a humorous and sometimes awkward journey through the streets of L.A., both in search of the perfect New Year's kiss.
