Tales of the mystical King Arthur pulling a sword from a stone, the legend of Camelot and an adulterous love triangle will take to the Lied Center for Performing Arts’ stage tonight at 7:30 p.m. in the musical “Camelot.” The Broadway show is considered one of the greats, said Bill Stephan interim director of the Lied.
“‘Camelot’ is one of Broadway’s most beloved musicals,” Stephan said. “It won a Tony Award for best musical.”
The Broadway show, which opened in 1960, is uncommonly performed and even more atypical to be found on tour.
“It is kind of a rare opportunity to see the production,” Stephan said.
Not only is the musical about a place straight from fairy tales, but it is also about the relationship between King Arthur and Queen Guinevere with Sir Lancelot thrown in.
“King Arthur is trying to make the world right: rather than using might for power, using might for right (and) making the world a better place overall,” Stephan said.
As King Arthur tries to save his kingdom, his wife tries to find true love. The musical, featuring songs such as “If I Ever Would Leave You” and “I Loved You Once in Silence,” follows the love triangle throughout.
“It is all medieval costuming, kind of like knights at a round table,” Stephan said.
On Wednesday morning, “Camelot” cast members will visit an Introduction to Theater class, where they will answer questions posed by the students.
“It is good for them to get the opportunity to interact,” said Petra Wahlqvist, events coordinator at the Lied. “It really enhances their learning about the theater.”
The class is made up of about 250 students, most of whom are non-theater majors.
“(The ‘Camelot’ actors) have had practice in the field of performance, and they will have a good experience, ” Wahlqvist said. “(The students) will probably have questions about the performance itself and the life of a touring actor.”
“Camelot” will also be performed at 7:30 on Wednesday evening.
Regular admission is $38 to 48 depending on seating, and $19 to 24 for students and youth.
