Combine humor straight from the Sunday comics with a little bit of music and blended with cream and sugar. What do you get? A little bit of ta-da.
"You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown" will open tonight at 7:30 in the TADA Theatre above Ivanna Cone in the Creamery Building at 701 P St. in the Haymarket.
"It looks like you are reading the Sunday comics," said Curt Bright, who plays Schroeder. "I always catch myself laughing because the actors are really good, and it is really good material."
The musical comedy illustrates what a day in the life of Charlie Brown, the main character from the "Peanuts" comic strip, would be like.
"The show itself it is actually based on a series of vignettes from the comic strip by Charles M. Schultz," said Bob Rook, "Charlie Brown's" director and the TADA managing artistic director. "It is intertwined with music to pull it all together."
From songs about Charlie trying to fly a kite to Schroeder singing about his love for Beethoven, the play brings together jokes for adults that are still kid-friendly.
"It's really a funny show with lots of jokes for grown-ups, but it would also be appropriate for children," Bright said. "There is no blue language. It is totally fun family entertainment."
The theater is performing the 1999 Broadway revival that was written by Clark Gesner.
"It's been a really popular show throughout the region," Rook said. "Everyone wanted something that is really family friendly this time of year."
The TADA Theatre got its start two years ago, blossoming out of its parent company TADA Productions.
"You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown" will be performed every Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights at 7:30 and Sunday at 2 p.m. for the next four weekends. The last show is Nov. 22.
While there will not be a Great Pumpkin on Halloween, those wearing costumes this Saturday will receive $3 off their admission.
"It is a great show for everyone to come out and see," Rook said.
