The spring season has yet to fully blossom, yet April's First Friday will display some fresh, vibrant artistic works at the Lux Center for the Arts, and continue in the weeks to come.
April will introduce two featured artists to the Lux with its First Friday show: California artist Cathy Breslaw and Montana ceramic artist Renee Brown. Breslaw's exhibit, entitled "Light Play," will feature works created from a very unique artistic medium.
Using industrial plastic mesh, conventionally utilized to make products like pot scrubbers or bath sponges, Breslaw has formed vibrant, texturized quilts.
"Her background is in painting," said Stephanie Leach, gallery director for the Lux. "But she wanted to begin working in sculpture with flexibility."
According to Leach, Breslaw discovered the material while spending time in Taiwan. She sews the mesh together in panels and stripes to create geometric quilting patterns. The quilted mesh pieces are displayed hanging against the wall of the Lux's spacious main gallery, as well as floating above the ground in midair.
"The work she creates is really colorful," said Carlos Guerrero, membership and marketing coordinator for the Lux. "They have a see-through quality, and the viewer can really get lost in the depth made by all the layers of material."
In the downstairs sales gallery, Brown's basket pottery will be displayed, available for immediate purchase.
As Leach describes, Brown has a very unique way of handling clay, bringing a human touch into her artistic pieces.
"It's so different than when you purchase ceramics from a store," Leach said. "Her hand is in it, unlike mass produced ceramics. You can see her fingerprints, where she was handling the pot."
Based on Leach's description of Brown's creative ceramic work, the clay baskets she has created celebrate the approaching Easter and May Day holidays.
Both artists offer viewers something unique and vibrant to please the eye, rendered through diverse mediums. These exhibits open Friday, with a reception from 5 to 8 p.m.
