If you're looking for some good live music on weeknights, then Brewsky's is the place to go.

On Monday nights, Brewsky's hosts Monday Night Big Band, a mixture of jazz musicians ranging from high school students to older professional musicians. On Wednesday nights, Brewsky's holds Lincoln Jazz Series which features different local ensembles.

The events are put on by the Capital Jazz Society, a non-profit organization that has been around since 2002. The group was created by musicians, for musicians, to have an organized place to play and promote jazz music.

Dean Haist has been around since the beginning of the organization.

"Our goal is to promote jazz music and feature local jazz groups," he said.

Nolan Treadway, a Capital Jazz Society volunteer, said the big band event has been held at the Ramada Inn and P.O. Pears before moving to Brewsky's.

The series usually follows the school year schedule, with different bands throughout the spring and fall. A few groups perform in the summer, as well.

The musicians come from various musical backgrounds and a wide age range.

"Not all the musicians featured are just jazz musicians, a lot of them do other things, as well," Haist said. "We have a lot of college students to much older musicians, as well."

Tommy Krueger, a sophomore music education major at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, will be playing the trumpet tonight at Brewsky's. The musicians sight-read the music each week because no practices are held.

"We never practice all together because there are so many different combinations of people that play each week that it varies," Krueger said.

The crowd is encouraged to bring along their instruments and join the band.

"I started going as a freshman, and after I got to know everyone, I got an e-mail to start coming on a regular basis," Krueger said. "I have a lot of fun and get a lot of great experience playing with professional musicians."
