Hyena-dodging, safari-trekking metal guitarist Marc Rizzo is coming back to Lincoln.

"I've played in Lincoln before," he said, "and it was a great show."

Rizzo will be performing at Knickerbockers on Jan. 19 to promote his new album "Legionnaire." Here, he shared his musical experiences and a few shocking stories with the Daily Nebraskan.

Daily Nebraskan: When did you start going solo and why?

Marc Rizzo: About 2004, and I had a bunch of songs recorded that were instrumental and acoustic. Friends of mine were telling me that they liked it, and it was always something that I have wanted to do. I've always been a big fan of Joe Satriani, Al Di Meola, instrumental guitar records. So that was the time to put it out. I started selling it at shows and online. Then Shrapnel Records got a hold of it and offered me a deal to put out the next solo record.

DN: You play with the bands Soulfly and Cavalera Conspiracy, tell us a little about those two bands:

MR: Soulfly and Cavalera Conspiracy are bands that I am also in. Soulfly is a band that I grew up listening to, and Max Cava lera was definitely one of my childhood idols. Getting to join Soulfly was pretty crazy for me. Then soon after I joined Soulfly, Max and his brother Igor reunited again and started the Cavalera Conspiracy and asked me to join and play guitar, so I had the opportunity to play with both of those guys. I'm a big fan.

DN: It must have been awesome to join somebody that you had looked up to as a kid.

MR: Yeah, it's crazy. I don't know how it happened. Just in the right place at the right time, and it worked out. Ten years ago I would not have believed it.

DN: How long have you all known each other? How did you meet?

MR: I have been in Soulfly since 2003, we met through Roadrunner Records. I did not expect that to happen — the opportunity just dropped on me.

DN: How is the musical styling of your solo different from the work you do with the bands?

MR: My solo records are instrumental guitar music and a lot of acoustic; it still has a really heavy metal sound.

DN: If you could play one song with one artist, dead or alive, who would it be and what would you play?
