Lincoln Public Schools students involved in the Visual Arts Mentoring Program will have the chance to exhibit some of their personal work for the eager eyes of the public.
The exhibition will run from April 1 through 17 at the Great Plains Art Museum, displaying art by students in grades kindergarten through 6th, who are interested in and gifted in the visual arts.
According to Amber Mohr, the curator of the Great Plains Art Museum, this is the eighth year the museum has partnered with the Visual Arts Mentoring Program to establish this exhibit that highlights the work of young art students. The program pairs students with mentors who work with artistic mediums relevant to the students' interests.
"This allows them to have an end goal in mind," Mohr said. "It's a chance to establish a comfort level with museums so they feel they belong to them, and they're not just for adults or academics."
Many of the students are very dedicated to the role they play in exhibiting their work in a museum. April 1 will mark the opening reception of the Lincoln Public Schools show from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., where students, mentors and family members will appear to support and observe the work. Many students will stand beside their art, ready to explain and discuss what they have created.
"It's different every year," Mohr said. "We're not really able to plan, as we don't know what students will bring in. You have to be as adaptable as possible."
The exhibit is unique in that it is one of the few opportunities for young students to exhibit art in a professional setting.
"We like being supportive of schools and their art programs," said Mohr. "It's always a fun exhibition."
