Pedro Almodóvar's films have often invited controversy and now even an informal discussion in Lincoln.
The Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center, 313 N. 13th St. will be the next recipient of the VIVA PEDRO! festival, a theatrical re-release of Pedro Almodóvar's eight most celebrated films.
The re-release is intended to bring the director's films to a new generation of audiences as well as present them to fans of his work in the manner in which it is meant to be viewed.
Dr. Marco Abel, film history and theory professor at University of Nebraska-Lincoln, will give a short lecture Sunday, Oct. 29 at 2:30 p.m., concerning Almodóvar's early career and his body of work; he will then open the discussion for general comments and questions.
Abel says that his talk is very informal so any viewer, fans of Almodóvar, film students or novices will benefit. His discussion will "contextualize [Almodóvar] in terms of his career and how he fits into the pantheon of European filmmakers." He also says that these films are present "for a new generation of people who have never seen his films."
"Almodóvar is the only European auteur out of the past twenty years who is successful and who has managed critical acclaim and box-office success," Abel said.
Abby Robbins, junior international business major at UNL, plans to attend the festival.
"It's great to see that the Ross is so supportive of a Spanish filmmaker who has a lot of great films and I'm excited that this is happening so close to campus."
