No penalty flags in the end zone meant fun after touchdowns for Nebraska quarterbacks Sam Keller and Joe Ganz on Saturday.
The two frontrunners in the Cornhusker QB battle this spring went head-to-head in front of 54,288 fans at the annual spring football game, using planned celebrations in the end zone to entertain the crowd.
The mock picture-taking, apparently Ganz's idea, seemed to be the favorite.
Overall, Ganz gave his teammates an average grade for their dancing skills.
"We did try to do the Macarena, but it didn't work out," Ganz said. "You know those o-linemen can't dance too well. We were trying to do some cheesy stuff - just have a little fun."
With the Reds stomping the second-string Whites 38-0, the scrimmage was a chance for current first-stringers like Keller and Ganz to show off.
Offensive Coordinator Shawn Watson said he was pleased with both quarterbacks' performances, noting Ganz's feet and Keller's decision-making abilities.
"The one thing that they are doing right now is they are really managing. They've got that down," Watson said. "I think when we first started, everybody was really pushing the learning curve, trying to create plays, and they were trying to go fishing a little bit.
"We made a lot of progress."
However, Watson said he didn't see anything to distinguish either quarterback over the other. He said he felt positive about each performance.
Keller completed 10-of-13 passes for 193 yards and a touchdown. Ganz connected on 11-of-18 throws for 157 yards, and also had a passing touchdown and 10-yard rushing touchdown.
Keller led the Reds during their first drive. In his Memorial Stadium debut on that drive, he completed 5-of-6 passes, the last coming on a 14-yard touchdown pass to senior Terrence Nunn.
"Like I said leading up, I was excited to get out in front of a crowd and be able to play," Keller said. "You know when there's a crowd out there, it's a game-like atmosphere, and something just turns on, and I just felt really good today."
But Ganz followed suit, completing 5-of-6 passes and ending the Reds' second drive with a touchdown of his own.
Overall, both said they were confident going into the offseason.
"I'm happy with this spring game," Ganz said. "I had a pretty good game. You know a couple throws here or there I wish could take back, but that's just the nature of the game. I'm pretty happy with my performance."
